The cup tie in Leverkusen a day before Christmas Eve represents the end of an unusual year of competitive football for the Red and Blacks. One curious fact: While the Werkself have played the Eagles 70 times in the league, this is only the second meeting in the DFB Cup. All Bayer 04 supporters will remember the first: Eintracht and Bayer 04 faced each other at the semi-final stage in 1993. In what was considered to be the supposed final, the Werkself won 3-0 with goals from Andreas Thom (2) and Ulf Kirsten. Bayer 04 went on to win the DFB Cup for the first time against the Hertha Berlin Reserves with Kirsten scoring the only goal of the game.
The two Bundesliga games ahead of the cup tie against Eintracht also promise to be entertaining encounters: On Wednesday 16 December (kick-off: 20.30 CET) Bayer 04 are away to Rhine rivals FC Köln. And Bayern Munich visit the BayArena on the weekend of 19/20 December.
After a few days of a well-earned 'winter break', the opponents for the Werkself are again Eintracht Frankfurt – albeit in another competition. The team under head coach Peter Bosz are away to Eintracht on Bundesliga matchday 14 on the first weekend of 2021 (2/3 January) .

Sandwiched between their UEFA Champions League knockout play-off tie against Olympiacos, Bayer 04 return to Bundesliga action on Saturday with a trip to Union Berlin (kick-off: 15:30 CET). It’s a fixture of contrasting styles, with Leverkusen preferring to control the play while Union look to remain compact and counter. The Berliners are therefore suited to facing top teams, but they have only ever managed to win one of 16 meetings with the Werkself, who are looking for a fifth clean sheet of 2026 but will need to beware the home side’s threat from set pieces. Here’s all you need to know ahead of the game in our matchday news.

It took exactly 60 minutes for the Werkself to take the lead through a perfectly finished counter-attack by Patrik Schick in the first leg of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League play-off at Olympiacos. Referring to the meeting in the league phase and the initially squandered opportunities, coach Kasper Hjulmand said afterwards: "I thought: 'Oh no, déjà-vu.'" But after the opening goal, it took just 144 seconds for the Czech to spark more wild celebrations among those in black and red in the Greek cauldron, when Schick nodded in Alejandro Grimaldo's corner. Much to the delight of the Bayer 04 fans, his teammates and his coach, who had warm words for the striker in the aftermath. The Werkself Review.
