Bayer 04 Campus

Good for Bayer 04. Good for MONHEIM.

Why Bayer 04 needs a Campus

With the planned Campus, Bayer 04 wants to create a home for around 250 athletes. Some of them are players from the professional teams. The majority are young, ambitious athletes whose talent Bayer 04 wants to develop under the best possible conditions in Monheim. This requires space. Not for gigantic buildings, but for training facilities and a sustainable, modern functional building.

The Bayer 04 Campus on the Bayer grounds

Currently, Bayer 04 players, whether young or old, train all over the region. This makes concentrated work immensely difficult, and some of the current pitches will be lost in the foreseeable future due to the expansion of the A1 autobahn. This is why Bayer 04 has been looking for a site for the Campus for around ten years and has already had 70 (!) sites professionally assessed during this time, without success. In the course of this process, the district government suggested the area opposite the Bayer site in Monheim. The plan is now to build a modern training facility here, for which Bayer 04 is investing a lot of money in Monheim. The Campus is thus part of Bayer's decades-long sports promotion programme.

New design with significantly less surface area

In the course of many discussions on site, it has became clear what is important to the people of Monheim. We have therefore significantly adapted our design:

  • We have reduced the required area by a third to just 14.8 hectares, the absolute minimum required to realise the Campus. And only a portion of this will be sealed off.
  • We will build only as many pitches as are absolutely necessary. And we will forego two complete training pitches. We will use hybrid and state-of-the-art artificial turf pitches, which use granulate that is completely recyclable.
  • We are increasing the distance to our neighbours by almost 60 percent. There are now 115 metres between the Campus and the neighbouring properties.
  • The green corridor will remain and be widened by 40 percent to 155 metres. At the same time, we are making the Campus as sustainable as possible.
  • With our specially developed water management system, we will reduce the impact on people, animals and the environment to an absolute minimum.
  • Monheim is set to benefit even more. In addition to around 150 new jobs, we will create facilities for local clubs and schools on the Campus. And we will be using companies from the region for its construction.
  • The car parks belonging to the Campus will now be integrated into the existing Bayer site.

Benefitting the entire region

The Campus will provide jobs for around 350 people in Monheim, with 150 of these being newly created. Apprenticeships will also be available. Regional companies will benefit from the construction and operation of the Campus, as will 1. FC Monheim, Sportfreunde Baumberg and other sports clubs. This includes coach training, football camps and the use of the Campus grounds. There will also be programmes for school classes and inclusion teams, for which we will also open the Campus. In other words, a project for the future that won't cost Monheim a single cent. And from which the whole town will benefit.

Questions and answers

Why does Bayer 04 want to build a Campus?

If you want to remain at the top internationally, you need the best possible conditions. This includes the multi-layered and innovative training of young athletes, as well as the possibility of a networked and continuously learning organisation of all Bayer 04 units. The club has lacked the space for this for some time now. The current training areas have not been sufficient for the further professionalisation of the work of the men's, women's and youth teams for several years. Due to the lack of space at the BayArena, Bayer 04 currently has to divide its work between several locations. Each of these locations for professional players, youth teams and administration, which are also far away from each other, is too small and outdated. This is a competitive disadvantage compared to many other clubs at this level.

This problem will be exacerbated by 2031 at the latest, when the space at the BayArena will be further reduced due to the expansion of the A1 autobahn. That is why Bayer 04 is planning an education, work and training area that is adaptable in the future and with which the club can react flexibly to new requirements. The Campus gives Bayer 04 the opportunity to combine training areas, create a more systematic exchange between areas, utilise synergies, simplify communication and establish an innovative corporate culture.

+++ 5 November 2025 - Statement on Monheim City Council decision +++

On Wednesday evening, 5 November, the cancellation of the B-Plan procedure for the Bayer 04 Campus was decided by the Monheim City Council with 24 to 19 votes in favour and four abstentions. The statement from Bayer 04:

"The Campus is currently receiving a lot of interest, including from Monheim. We are pleased about this and it shows we are planning at the right location. It is incomprehensible to us that the city council has now followed the motion of the CDU, SPD, Alliance 90/The Greens and FDP and cancelled the layout plan for the construction of the Campus at its constituent meeting - particularly in view of the fact that all those involved were aware that Bayer 04 would be presenting a fundamentally revised plan on a long-agreed date of 12 November. The new plans are based on the findings of the participation process to date and discussions with the parliamentary groups. Naturally, we respect the decision of the politicians, even if valuable time is now being lost unnecessarily, and we are sticking to 12 November in order to find a joint solution for the Bayer 04 Campus on Alfred-Nobel-Strasse."

+++ 1 November 2025 - Fan petition for Bayer 04 Campus +++

Next Wednesday, 5 November, an important decision on the Bayer 04 Campus will be on the agenda of the Monheim am Rhein City Council. The CDU, SPD, Greens and FDP want to cancel the land-use planning process - even though Bayer 04 has modified the original plans as agreed and has not yet been able to present this revised plan to politicians.

The issue moves and mobilises Bayer 04 fans. They have started a petition. "The Bayer 04 Campus is an important project for the future - for the entire Bayer community, for Monheim, Leverkusen and for our region," write the initiators. You can also support the petition.

+++ 25 September 2025 - The residents' ideas in one picture +++

An entire workshop at a glance! Thanks to the Illustren Runde graphic recorder, Bayer 04 can see which aspects of the green corridor and possible leisure activities are important to the people of Monheim. The points were discussed at the workshop on 28 August in Monheim. The project is still at a very early stage of the process. It is important for Bayer 04 to know and understand the opinions and ideas of local residents right from the start. Even though the complex approval process is in full swing and the green light for construction has not yet been given, the club is already interested in the wishes and suggestions of potential future neighbours. This is the only way that ideas can be incorporated into the planning process in good time. Bayer 04 is now analysing the suggestions from the workshop and other interest groups in order to find the best solutions for residents, the environment and the footballers.

+++ 28 August 2025 - Active co-design of the green corridor by local residents +++

With the aim of active participation and constructive dialogue with local residents, Bayer 04 and Monheim am Rhein City Council hosted a community participation event on Thursday evening with regard to the planned Bayer 04 Campus. The workshop in the Monheim assembly hall offered Monheim residents the opportunity to play an active and decisive role in the design of the planned green corridor between the residential area and the planned campus site. All information is available HERE.

+++ 14 July 2025 - Participation portal for the green corridor +++

There will be a green corridor between the Campus and the neighbouring houses, which will serve to protect wildlife and provide for local recreation. Citizens can help decide exactly what this will look like. As of today, Monheim City Council is giving people the opportunity to submit ideas and suggestions via its participation portal: Go to the participation portal. The suggestions will form the basis for a workshop at which the ideas for the green corridor will be presented and further developed and discussed with citizens, stakeholders and experts.

The online survey at this early stage of the project does not mean that approval is imminent. In the course of the process, we want to collect the objectives, wishes and interests of private individuals, companies and public bodies. The feedback can provide important objectives and ideas, and gives us the opportunity to identify and consider as many objectives as possible.

+++ 25 May 2025 - Presentation to read +++

At the citizens' consultation in Monheim, Fernando Carro, Simon Rolfes and Anne Dannenberg had the opportunity to present the idea and status of the Campus project to the people. The presentation they gave that evening is available here - even if some aspects may not be entirely self-explanatory without the additional verbal information.

+++ 5 May 2025 - City of Monheim publishes expert report +++

Independent experts have analysed whether the preliminary plans for the Bayer 04 Campus basically meet the applicable legal limits for traffic, light and noise, for example. Monheim City Council published these reports today. Local residents and associations have the opportunity to submit comments on the project. These will be evaluated by the Monheim council and incorporated into the further process.

Bayer 04 is preparing for the future. The club is planning one of the most professional performance centres for football in Europe. Optimum training conditions all year round for men’s, women's and youth teams. Physiotherapy and rehabilitation at the highest level. Space for innovation, sustainable concepts and a continuously learning organisation - that will be the Bayer 04 Campus. What was previously scattered across various locations will in future be brought together on a new site. That means short distances and the best possible networking. For Bayer 04, the Campus is much more than the sum of these parts. It is the next decisive step on the club's path into the future.

“We’re taking our destiny into our own hands and want to take the next important step in the development of Bayer 04. Our goal is long-term success. To achieve this, we need the best possible conditions. These are to be created with the Campus and the Talent House.”

Fernando Carro, Bayer 04 CEO

Simon Rolfes

“For the Campus, we looked at the concepts of top clubs throughout Europe and compared them with the ideas and requirements at Bayer 04. We’re taking our own bold and modern approach. Anyone planning a football performance centre in the future should come to the Rhineland first to see our Campus.”

Simon Rolfes, Bayer 04 Managing Director Sport

Bayer 04 Campus

Bayer 04 is planning the Campus on a 22-hectare site in Monheim on the outskirts of Leverkusen and is counting on the approval of the regional council and the authorities involved in the development plan process. The challenge is to find an area that is large enough, that is available, on which construction is permitted and on which the Campus can be reliably built within the tight timeframe of four to six years. Over the past nine years, we have extensively examined 70 sites in Leverkusen, Cologne, Langenfeld, Monheim, Leichlingen and Burscheid, in some cases several times, and engaged in intensive dialogue with the relevant authorities.

From the club's point of view, the site directly next to the headquarters of the Bayer Crop Science division in Monheim proved to be the most suitable. It fulfils all the criteria that are essential for the Bayer 04 Campus and is in the extended vicinity of the BayArena. We are therefore preparing everything we need to apply to the relevant authorities for planning permission for this site. The city of Monheim is supporting us in our endeavours. We are in constant dialogue with the local government, the representatives of the Monheim City Council and all the approval authorities regarding the details of our project.
