New signing Caroline Kehrer: 'I've come here to challenge myself'

Caroline Kehrer signed for the Bayer 04 Women's team in the summer after two successful years as a striker at SC Braga. The Canadian American centre-forward wants to carry on at Leverkusen where she left off in Portugal. That intention started well with three goals in pre-season friendlies. In an interview with bayer04.de, the 27-year-old talks about the many nationalities in the team as well as her approach on and off the pitch.
Caroline Kehrer

Caroline, how have you got on here compared with your last club?

Kehrer: The whole environment here is very competitive in a positive sense and you can see that in the mentality of my teammates. It's great fun to do my job with such intensity. I didn't experience that in Portugal. Of course, I had to get used to things at first but now I'm getting into more of a rhythm.

How are you doing with your knowledge of German?

Kehrer: Of course, the language is a big change. But I'm here to challenge myself and I'm happy to work on it. Danke schön and a couple of basics are working already (she laughs). I look forward to my German lessons and I want to improve quickly and that's very important to me.

What does having so many nationalities in the squad mean to you?

Kehrer: You pick up a bit of everything from all the different styles of play and that then creates a new picture. And that's what it really comes down to with the team: Different characters and different elements produce something very good. It's fun getting to know the other girls off the pitch and learning something about their home countries.

What did you know about the Bundesliga before your move? And what attracted you to Germany?

Kehrer: It was clear to me that the league is, above all, very strong physically and that's why I will always wants to play in it. I heard a lot of good things about the country and the people. I didn't have to think about it too long when the chance came.

What are the key elements of your game?

Kehrer: I love going forward into attack, scoring goals and helping the team with other attacking moves. I also like sprinting behind the lines and picking up the ball to get in one-on-one situations.

My game not only includes goals but also the final passes up frontCaroline Kehrer

How would you describe yourself?

Kehrer: I'm very much a family person and I like doing a lot with friends. I like building up connections with new people. I'm always a bit quieter at the beginning but I become more and more open with time. Here in the team it helps that I'm not the only one to have so many new things to deal with.

What are your targets in the coming season for yourself and with the team?

Kehrer: I'd like to score as often as possible. I scored twelve times in Portugal last season and we'll see what’s possible here in Germany. My game not only includes goals but also the final passes up front. At the end of the day it doesn't matter to me how I help the team to be successful. We want to compete as high as we can in the table. I can't wait to see where it leads to in the end.
