‘Break records’: Women start final push in Potsdam

With three games to play before the end of the season in the Google Pixel Women's Bundesliga, the Werkself are four points behind the Champions League qualification spots. To maintain the chance of finishing third, the team led by coach Roberto Pätzold have to win in the opening game on Matchday 20 away to Turbine Potsdam on Friday night (18:30 CEST, live on MagentaSport and DAZN) in the knowledge that the team at the bottom the table are battling to stay up.

"The fact it's no longer in our hands can have a liberating effect," said Pätzold: "I've told the team it's now all about breaking records – in relation to points, wins, goals, clean sheets. Our aspirations remain high." The Leverkusen Women have already surpassed two of those hurdles, namely points (37) and wins (eleven), and they could extend that in Potsdam, at home to RB Leipzig and away to VfL Wolfsburg. The eight clean sheets so far the season is a repetition of last term. That record can be broken. Eleven goals are required to beat the goalscoring record set in the 2013/14 campaign (44).

Pätzold: "show necessary killer instinct"

As before, the possibility of moving up to third place would be even more valuable than these numbers. Wolfsburg, who the Bayer 04 Women play on the last day of the season, have 42 points, Eintracht Frankfurt 41. "Now we can go ahead and see what that does to our rivals. But it is crucial we play more effectively and show the necessary killer instinct," said Pätzold: "We believe we can score from open play or from set-pieces. If we can break the deadlock then there will be a clear result. But we will also take a 1-0 win."

Potsdam, marooned at the bottom of the table with just one point, would be relegated on matchday 20 if they are unable to secure their first win of the season against the Werkself. "They will fight that with tooth and nail as they already have in many matches," said the 45 year-old: "They are very compact in defence and they make it difficult for the opponents. We've experienced that twice this season ourselves." In the 3-0 win in the Hinrunde his team were helped by an early goal with the winner in the 1-0 victory in the DFB Pokal Round of 16 tie coming late on. "There are very few games where they have suffered heavy defeats," said Pätzold: "They are able to compete against top teams. They will do all they can to avoid being relegated at home. We have to go into the game with 100% mentality and focus – and respect for the team who again and again pick themselves up despite many setbacks."

Turanyi returns to the squad

Lilla Turanyi is available again for this game after recovering from illness. The central defender is back in the squad. There is a question mark over Ida Daedelow (knock). Vanessa Haim (muscle injury), Paulina Bartz (ill), plus long-term absentees Shen Menglu and Sofia Cava Marin (both torn cruciates) are sidelined. Fans who want to support the Leverkusen Women in Potsdam can secure tickets HERE in advance from €12.10 or from the matchday ticket office.
