"It's a very important game for both teams in this competition. Both teams will be very motivated," declared Kasper Hjulmand right at the start of the pre-match press conference on Tuesday night, referring to the points haul of both teams so far. In contrast to the Werkself, who have collected two points from their first three games in the Champions League, Benfica have yet to pick up a point. Hjulmand: "The aim is to get back into the tournament tomorrow with a win."
Bayer 04 have a clear approach to this game: "We are focussing solely on our own performance, we want to be proactive, courageous and determined, and play our own game. We're ready for a big match, a big fight to get three important points." The Bundesliga defeat in Munich last weekend is no longer an issue for him: "We play every three days. We can't avoid looking ahead to the next match as soon as the final whistle blows. It's completely normal to have setbacks from time to time. Even if you always want to avoid them, of course. But overall, we're making good progress and learning from game to game."
Portuguese journalists also asked the Dane about top performer Alejandro Grimaldo: "Grima is having a fantastic season and always in different roles. He is very versatile. And in many games as our captain, he absolutely leads the way."

For Grimaldo, it is his first return to Lisbon as a player for the Werkself. The Spaniard said of his seven-and-a-half years at Benfica from 2016 to 2023: "It's a very big club and I'm proud to have played here for so long and to have been so successful (including four league titles, ed.). But now I'm at Bayer 04 and I'm only focussing on this season. I'm very happy to be here and feel a lot of trust from the people in charge and the fans. We are prepared for the opponents and the atmosphere in the stadium. We enjoy big games like this - I want to win here tomorrow with the lads!" Grimaldo and Co. will have the support of 1,800 fans from Leverkusen at tomorrow’s match.

In mid-August, the Werkself will set off on a four-day trip to England to play their final two friendly matches of the 2026/27 pre-season against Premier League clubs Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United. The match in Nottingham against the Tricky Trees is on Wednesday 12 August at 20:45 CEST (19:45 BST) at the City Ground. The game against the Magpies in Newcastle is on Saturday 15 August at 16:00 CEST (15:00 BST) at the atmospheric St James’ Park. Details on ticket sales for both matches.
