Ahead of the individual district matchday there will be numerous events that begin weeks before the match. For example, Bayer 04 will visit kindergartens and schools, call in on roundtable discussions in pubs, organise a morning get together on match days, fan festivals, penalty tournaments, and stage competitions and events as well as many other activities. There will also be a discounted ticket offer for all residents of the particular district. There will be a very special stadium experience on the matchday: a dedicated block for all the residents of the district.
There will also be a monthly event under the title of "Who has the nicest Bayer 04 living room." On each district matchday, residents of the particular district can send in a photo of their room decked out in a Bayer 04 look via email to club@bayer04.de. Fans can vote for the best one on the Bayer 04 app. The winners can look forward to receiving an exclusive prize.
The first district matchday is at the end of October. The Bundesliga match against SC Freiburg (Sunday 29 October, 17.30 CEST) will be staged under the motto Bayer 04 is Opladen. This month, all residents of Opladen can look forward to a visit from Bayer 04 record appearance maker Rüdiger Vollborn at the Zwieback pub. The former Werkself keeper will spend an evening with you in a relaxed roundtable discussion on Thursday 12 October from 18.00 CEST. Booking is requested but not compulsory. Information on the event as well as registration can be found HERE.
Another highlight of the first district matchday is a visit by a men's team player and a women's team player as part of the ‘Bayer 04 Lernkurve’ (Learning curve) project at the GGS Opladen primary school on 17 October. A full view of the programme with all activities this month can be seen HERE.

Sandwiched between their UEFA Champions League knockout play-off tie against Olympiacos, Bayer 04 return to Bundesliga action on Saturday with a trip to Union Berlin (kick-off: 15:30 CET). It’s a fixture of contrasting styles, with Leverkusen preferring to control the play while Union look to remain compact and counter. The Berliners are therefore suited to facing top teams, but they have only ever managed to win one of 16 meetings with the Werkself, who are looking for a fifth clean sheet of 2026 but will need to beware the home side’s threat from set pieces. Here’s all you need to know ahead of the game in our matchday news.

It took exactly 60 minutes for the Werkself to take the lead through a perfectly finished counter-attack by Patrik Schick in the first leg of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League play-off at Olympiacos. Referring to the meeting in the league phase and the initially squandered opportunities, coach Kasper Hjulmand said afterwards: "I thought: 'Oh no, déjà-vu.'" But after the opening goal, it took just 144 seconds for the Czech to spark more wild celebrations among those in black and red in the Greek cauldron, when Schick nodded in Alejandro Grimaldo's corner. Much to the delight of the Bayer 04 fans, his teammates and his coach, who had warm words for the striker in the aftermath. The Werkself Review.
