#B04eSports: Leverkusen lose out to favourites SC Freiburg in quarter-finals of VBL CC finals

It was the end of the road for the #B04eSports team against SC Freiburg. Marc and Sean Landwehr were narrowly defeated by the top favourites in the quarter-finals of the VBL Club Championship Final 2025/26. After a success in the first 1v1 game (4-2) and a subsequent defeat (0-4), the overall goals tally ultimately decided who progressed to the semi-finals in the clash against the league leaders from the previous phase.

Sean wins for starters, Marc loses out to 'NASSADA-'

Sean 'SEAN_LDW07' Landwehr first faced Freiburg's Gianluca ‘SCF_GIANLUCA’ Mautone, who started an eventful and goal-laden first half with his opening strike. However, Sean Landwehr kept his cool and turned the game round with a double whammy from Patrik Schick within four minutes, before Mautone equalised at 2-2 before the break. The Leverkusen player then took control again in the second half and laid the foundations for the opening victory with a very good defence, which he rounded off with Schick and Christian Kofane netting in the course of the second period - final score 4-2.

Marc 'MARC_LDW23' Landwehr then came up against the absolute top player in the current VBL CC season: Nassim ‘NASSADA-’ Dahman. Freiburg's World Cup participant took the lead after three minutes, then pressed very high and became a real threat in every attack. But Marc Landwehr also played his way forward time and again - including when he was brought down in the opposition penalty area. There was ‘only’ a yellow card for this offence and, to make matters worse, the Freiburg goalkeeper also saved the penalty. In the end, Dahman's class prevailed and he increased the individual score to 4-0, making the overall result 4-6 from a Leverkusen perspective.

"the ranking confirms our strong performance levels"

As a result, Bayer 04 finished the season in the top eight in Germany and entered the history books with the first showdown victory in VBL CC history. Marc Fiedler, Manager Product Management B2B & eSports: "The season was a real challenge for all teams due to the new format. However, we were able to make a clear statement early on and win the first showdown. Our place in the VBL CC Final confirms our strong performance levels. The lads will now take this energy with them to give their all in the DFB ePokal final and the VBL Grand Final."

next up: DFB ePokal and Grand Final

However, the eSports season is far from over for the Landwehr cousins with the conclusion of the VBL Club Championship. The Leverkusen duo still have two more important competitions ahead of them. The finals of the DFB ePokal powered by ERGO will take place at the end of March. The Landwehr cousins bagged their ticket for this competition by winning the first VBL CC showdown - an advantage that benefits the winners of the first four of the five showdowns. In the eCup, four professional clubs will face four amateur teams that have won through in previous qualifying rounds. Information on the structure of the DFBePokal can be found HERE and on the official website of the DFBePokal.

From 18 to 19 April, the biggest highlight of the German eSports scene besides the VBL CC awaits the Landwehr cousins - the VBL Grand Final by WOW, the competition for the German Individual Championship. Winning the first showdown was also worth it! The five Showdown winners were each allowed to nominate two eSports players from their squad for the Grand Final. Marc and Sean Landwehr have therefore also already secured their place at this event and they did not have to take part in the previous qualification rounds such as the VBL Open and VBL Open Play-offs. Information on the Grand Final by WOW can be found HERE.
