Amiri plays the Bundesliga Home Challenge

Matchday three in the Bundesliga Home Challenge – after Adrian Stanilewicz and Wendell, Nadiem Amiri now joins Bayer 04 eSports player Kai ‘deto’ Wollin. The Black and Red duo take on a VfB Stuttgart team on PlayStation 4 on Saturday night (from 20.00 CET on the Twitch channel ‘b04esports’).

Leverkusen’s eSports pro ‘deto’ has recently been taking part in tournaments at regular intervals. This week there was an international online event that included games against eSports players from Djurgardens IF (Norway) and VfL Wolfsburg. The three-time world champion meets VfB eSports player Niklas ‘Nik_Lugi’ Luginsland on Saturday in the ‘Bundesliga Home Challenge’.

Amiri backs his virtual self

Wollin’s partner Nadiem Amiri is looking forward to the clash with Stuttgart’s second division player Atakan Karazor. He has picked up the controller a lot over the past couple of weeks. “I think I’m pretty good,” said the 23-year-old who is backing his virtual self in holding midfield in his favoured formation of 4-4-2 and he is more of a quiet type of player in front of the computer screen – with one exception as he revealed with a wink: “Except when I’m playing against my friends. It can get a bit louder.”

The Bundesliga Home Challenge:
As a result of the suspension of fixtures in German professional football and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the DFL has set up the Bundesliga Home Challenge. 29 of the 36 Bundesliga clubs are represented on matchday two. The teams are made up of one first-team player per club plus "one person from the relevant club or associated with it." In addition, Deniz Aytekin and Daniel Schlager make up the Bundesliga referees team.

The challenge is played in the so-called 85 mode on PlayStation 4 without an official ranking. The virtual players therefore have the same overall strength. On matchday one, 'deto' and Adrian Stanilewicz played Darmstadt 98, ‘deto’ and Wendell took on a Dynamo Dresden team on matchday two.

Matchday news #FCUB04: Continue unbeaten run at set-piece specialists Union Berlin

Sandwiched between their UEFA Champions League knockout play-off tie against Olympiacos, Bayer 04 return to Bundesliga action on Saturday with a trip to Union Berlin (kick-off: 15:30 CET). It’s a fixture of contrasting styles, with Leverkusen preferring to control the play while Union look to remain compact and counter. The Berliners are therefore suited to facing top teams, but they have only ever managed to win one of 16 meetings with the Werkself, who are looking for a fifth clean sheet of 2026 but will need to beware the home side’s threat from set pieces. Here’s all you need to know ahead of the game in our matchday news.

Werkself Review #OLYB04: 'The first step is done'

It took exactly 60 minutes for the Werkself to take the lead through a perfectly finished counter-attack by Patrik Schick in the first leg of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League play-off at Olympiacos. Referring to the meeting in the league phase and the initially squandered opportunities, coach Kasper Hjulmand said afterwards: "I thought: 'Oh no, déjà-vu.'" But after the opening goal, it took just 144 seconds for the Czech to spark more wild celebrations among those in black and red in the Greek cauldron, when Schick nodded in Alejandro Grimaldo's corner. Much to the delight of the Bayer 04 fans, his teammates and his coach, who had warm words for the striker in the aftermath. The Werkself Review.
