The last time the Werkself hosted FC St. Pauli in the DFB Pokal was in 1976 at what was then the Ulrich Haberland Stadium. As on that day (3-1 a.e.t.), Bayer 04 have also won the last four matches at home against the Kiezkicker and not lost to the Hamburg club in eleven games. This is the fifth time Florian Badstübner has taken charge of a Werkself match. The 37-year-old has also previously refereed a Leverkusen match in the DFB Pokal: In August 2016, Bayer 04 beat SC Hauenstein 2-1 in the first round under him. On Tuesday night, Badstübner will have the support of assistant referees Markus Schüller and Philipp Hüwe. Johann Pfeifer will act as the video assistant referee.

Since mid-October last year, the A59 motorway in Leverkusen has been fully closed for around eight months due to roadworks. The closure begins at the Düsseldorf-Süd motorway junction and lasts until the Richrath junction. After that, the motorway in the opposite direction will also be closed. Overall, the closure is expected to last until the end of 2027.
