The draw was made by the former Germany international and current DFB integration officer Cacau. The DFB general secretary Friedrich Curtius was in charge of proceedings.
“A home tie is what we wanted for the quarter-finals. Union are obviously a good opponent, a team that can give you problems and they never sell themselves short. But our ambition is clear: We definitely want to go through to the semi-finals,” said Bayer 04 sporting director Simon Rolfes in response to the draw.
And head coach Peter Bosz was also pleased: “It’s a good draw for us as we’re at home again. Union Berlin have often showed this season that they are a resilient team. We will give our all to progress to the DFB Cup semi-finals and that’s massive motivation.”
The Werkself and Union Berlin have already met twice in the second round of the DFB Cup: In 2003/04, Bayer 04 clocked up a convincing 5-0 win away and that was followed in 2017/18 by a 4-1 win for the Werkself at the BayArena.
Tickets for the game at the BayArena are available from next week. Sales start for Bayer 04 Club members on Thursday 13 February at 10.00 CET. Tickets go on open sale from Tuesday 18 February at 10.00 CET.

Montrell Culbreath stood out with his first goal on his debut for the Black and Reds. While the 18-year-old would certainly like to score a second goal against Leipzig on Saturday night, the attack-minded visitors come to the BayArena in confident mood after five Bundesliga victories in a row. The Nordkurve12 supporters group knows the Werkself will therefore once again be reliant on the vociferous support of the fans, and has once again called for the ‘Finally Red’ campaign in the run-in. Several hundred fans came to take part in the charity campaign.
