Matchday news #OLYB04: Looking for third UCL win

The Werkself are away to Greek double winners Olympiacos on matchday 7 in the league phase of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League campaign. Tonight, 20 January (kick-off: 22:00 local time/21:00 CET), Bayer 04 will not only face a familiar face in Panagiotis Retsos, but also an experienced and successful team in their Greek top-flight opponents. The Olympiacos midfield and forward line in particular are peppered with seasoned veterans from top European clubs - but even they will first have to find solutions against the Werkself defence that has recently performed with aplomb in the UCL. The matchday news.

#OLYB04 – match facts

Bayer 04 have already faced Olympiacos twice in the Champions League. In the group stage in 2002/03, Klaus Toppmöller's Werkself learned their lesson from a 6-2 away defeat as they beat the Greeks 2-0 at home thanks to goals from Juan and captain Bernd Schneider. In recent years, Leverkusen have also fared well against opponents outside the top five European leagues, winning 14 of their last 19 European matches and losing none.

The strong Champions League defence of the team led by Kasper Hjulmand - which has conceded just two goals in the last three UCL matches, the fourth-fewest in the competition - should lay the foundations for the first win in four away games in Greece. Aleix Garcia, who has delivered the third-most line-breaking passes in the league phase so far, could once again activate his through ball delivery service. In the game against Olympiacos, the Spaniard will be up against coach José Luis Mendilibar, his former manager from his time at SD Eibar in La Liga. And the captain of the Greek side is also a familiar face at Bayer 04: Panagiotis Retsos played 43 games for the Black and Reds between 2017 and 2022. Ahead of the match, he spoke in an interview with bayer04.de about his fond memories of his time at Leverkusen and the impending reunion with former team-mates.

focus on Olympiacos

With a narrow 1-0 win at Kairat Almaty, Olympiacos moved very close to the play-off places again after the Mendilibar side nearly held Real Madrid (3-4) and drew with PSV Eindhoven (1-1) in their previous games. Despite their recent elimination from the Greek cup competition, the Red and Whites have enjoyed success outside of the UCL in recent years, winning the UEFA Conference League in 2024 and then the domestic double of championship and cup. The experience of the team around captain Retsos has proved to be a trump card: Alongside Gelson Martins and Daniel Podence (both 30 years old), striker Mehdi Taremi (33) also brings many years of experience from top European clubs. Where the Greek champions do have problems, however, is shown in our lowdown on the next opponents.

Sound of Dreams: THE Tour Pass for the UCL

When the Werkself invite Olympiacos to a sirtaki on Tuesday night, true to the motto ‘Sound of Dreams - #aCROSS Europe 2025/26’, an appropriate musical backdrop is of course a must. The exclusive UCL Spotify playlist will bring this to the ears of Bayer 04 fans. In addition, all holders of the Champions League Tour Pass will once again be able to secure matching stickers for this away game at the Fanwelt in the south stand at the BayArena this week - and win great prizes at the end of the league phase.

1,400 werkself Fans in athens

1,400 Bayer 04 fans are making the journey to historic Athens to defy the noisy Olympiacos supporters at the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium tonight as they look to cheer the Werkself on to an important away win.

the match officials

Italian referee Maurizio Mariani takes charge of a Werkself match for the third time. Bayer 04 are still unbeaten under him, winning the UEFA Europa League match against Nice in December 2020 and drawing with Club Brugge in the Champions League two years later. The 43-year-old's all-Italian team is completed by assistant referees Daniele Bindoni and Stefano Alassio plus Marco di Bello as the VAR.

Werkself review #HSVB04: Reward for committed performance

"We played with pace and patience today. That was the decisive factor," said managing director sport Simon Rolfes following the 1-0 win at Hamburger SV in the rearranged match on Wednesday night. Although the Werkself still had room for improvement in terms of capitalising on their chances against the Red Shorts, they produced a different display to last time out and were rewarded for a concentrated performance over 90 minutes.
