There is huge anticipation ahead of the Champions League. Equally so for the first home game. Especially as Bayer 04 fans will then have to be patient before the next home appearance in Europe's premier club competition. After the game against Lokomotiv Moscow, the Peter Bosz team (in Group D) have two away fixtures – the Champions League anthem will only ring out at the BayArena again at the beginning of November on matchday four. Reason enough to secure tickets for the first group match for the Werkself at home to Lokomotiv Moscow.
The match promises to be exciting. The team from the Russian capital count as one of the big unknowns for Bayer 04. The two clubs have never played each other before. Last season, Lokomotiv were runners-up to Zenit St. Petersburg in Russia's top-flight and they also won the domestic cup competition. That was the tenth national title in the club's history. The three-time Russian champions were in the Champions League last term but went out early losing to Schalke 04 (0-1 and 0-1). The only three points picked up by Lokomotiv were in a 2-0 win against Galatasaray.
The team coached by Juri Sjomin includes a number of players who are known from their time in the Bundesliga. The now 33-year-old versatile defender Vedran Corluka played for the Werkself – he made seven appearances in the Bundesliga for Bayer 04 in 2012. The Lokomotiv squad also includes two former Schalke stalwarts: World Cup winner Benedikt Höwedes (31) and winger Jefferson Farfán (34). Midfielder Joao Mário and striker Èder, both European Champions with Portugal in 2016, are two other Moscow players with experience on the European stage.
Individual tickets for the Werkself home game against Lokomotiv Moscow are initially available to Club members from Tuesday 3 September from 10.00 CET and go on open sale from Thursday 5 September (10.00 CET).
