Augsburg has usually been a favourable fixture for the Werkself, who have lost only twice in 26 Bundesliga meetings. It means the Bavarians have averaged only 0.5 points per game against Leverkusen, which is their lowest return against any team at this level.
In terms of current form, though, both teams are looking good. Augsburg have lost only one of their last six league games and are well set on 16 points after 13 matchdays. The Bavarians also boast the third-best home record this season, behind Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. However, Bayer 04 haven’t lost in any of their last 23 away games in the Bundesliga and have registered three straight wins in the league for the first time this season.
Should the Werkself come away from Augsburg with a result, it will mean they have finished 2024 without a single defeat on the road in the Bundesliga. The only team to previously achieve that feat in a calendar year is Bayern in 1986 and 2013.
Augsburg recently joined Leverkusen in the quarter-finals of the DFB Pokal and are in confident mood after last weekend’s 2-2 draw away at second-placed Eintracht Frankfurt. As well as excellent home form, they are also among the best teams in the division on the counter, scoring four goals from transitions. However, the Bavarians’ biggest weakness is in defending set pieces. Jess Thorup’s side have already conceded nine goals from dead balls, as well as a league-worst eight headed goals. The German FA (DFB) has appointed Felix Zwayer to oversee this game in Augsburg. The 43-year-old has previously taken charge of 34 fixtures involving the Werkself (W17, D8, L9). His assistants and Robert Kempter and Christian Dietz. The VAR is Benjamin Cortus.
With seven points from five games, Union Berlin have made a decent start to the season. Particularly in the wins against VfB Stuttgart and Eintracht Frankfurt, the Irons, who are otherwise known for their strong defence, impressively demonstrated they also have a lot to offer in attack. They will be looking to prove this once again at the BayArena on Saturday, 4 October (kick-off: 15:30 CEST, match on Sky and highlights on DAZN). The lowdown on our next opponents.
