Russia took the lead in Sochi with a wonder goal from Denis Cheryshev on 31 minutes. Croatia were back on level terms eight minutes later with a header from Hoffenheim's Andrej Kramaric. The match remained evenly balanced in the second half although Croatia clearly had the upper hand in the closing stages. The former Bayer 04 pro Domagoj Vida restored the lead for Croatia in extra time with a well-placed header on 101 minutes. But Russia refused to give up and Mario Fernandes converted a free kick with a header with five minutes to play. Time for another penalty shootout.
