No fans at the BayArena for games against Nice and Augsburg

Bayer 04 have decided to play the next two home games at the BayArena behind closed doors. This decision applies to the Europa League clash with Nice (22 October) and the Bundesliga match against FC Augsburg (26 October). The background to this decision is the increasing COVID-19 infection rates in and around Leverkusen.

The current infection rate, which acts as a guideline and basis for official approval for matches to be played with crowds, has risen continuously in Leverkusen and surrounding districts since the start of October. At the moment the city of Leverkusen is classified as a risk area as the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants over the past seven days – known as the seven-day rate – has exceeded 50.

“It’s very difficult for us to have to manage without the support of our fans in the forthcoming crucial games. However, we want to and must play our part as an organisation and take responsibility as every other individual should do. We hope the trend not just in Leverkusen falls again as soon as possible,” said Fernando Carro, chairman of the board at Bayer 04.

FSV Mainz 05 v Bayer 04 (17 October, 15.30 CEST)

Bayer 04 v OGC Nice (22 October, 18.55 CEST)

The Berliners are therefore suited to facing top teams, but they have only ever managed to win one of 16 meetings with the Werkself, who are looking for a fifth clean sheet of 2026 but will need to beware the home side’s threat from set pieces.
