Last week the Werkself sealed a Champions League spot ahead of the final game of the season against Freiburg. Eleven years ago to the day things looked completely different: On matchday 34 in the 2010/11 season the team under the then coach Jupp Heynckes were away to SCF – and they sealed qualification for the Champions League with a 1-0 win thanks to a goal from Hanno Balitsch in second place behind Bayern Munich. For Bayer 04 it was the first Champions League campaign since the 2004/05 season. Heynckes returned to FC Bayern at the end of the season and he took his assistant coach Peter Hermann with him.

At the end of that season, the 6 foot 3 shot-stopper moved on to Fortuna Düsseldorf where he ended his playing career two years ago.

At its first general meeting on 5 February 2026 in Frankfurt am Main, the Frauen Bundesliga FBL e.V. made key decisions regarding the future direction of the Women’s Bundesliga. As in the past two years, the Werkself are aiming to come out on top in the DFB Pokal quarter-finals on Tuesday night, 3 February (kick-off: 20:45 CET). With eleven home games in a row without defeat against the Kiezkicker, the Black and Reds go into the floodlit match in confident mood. But the Pokal, as is often said, has its own magic and the team from the Millerntor has much more to offer than the current 17th place in the Bundesliga would suggest.
