promotion to second division 47 years ago

After two years in the amateur game, the Werkself returned to professional football 47 years ago. Promotion to Bundesliga 2 North was achieved on 15 June 1975. A 3-2 win against Arminia Hannover in front of 10,000 spectators secured promotion to Germany's second tier. As the reigning champions of the Middle Rhine League in 1974/75, the team under head coach Manfred Rummel not only played the team from Lower Saxony but also had to go through against Union Solingen over two legs in promotion play-offs. The Black and Reds won three of the four games to progress to the second division. Promotion to the Bundesliga came four years later in 1979.
