On matchday 25, Bayer 04 travel to the newly promoted team from Ulm who are making a very good impression in thirteenth place six points ahead of the drop zone. FC Bayern are away to Hertha Berlin who need every point to secure a UEFA Cup spot.
When both games kick off at 15:30 CET, the Berlin spectators do not imagine they will be looking at the scoreboard much on the day.
The FC Bayern captain, Stefan Effenberg, spoke to the waiting journalists after match: "I picked up on the constant murmur through the crowd. You don't see that every day." Bayern could live with a draw in Berlin but the current form of the Werkself worried the champions: "It's remarkable how Leverkusen are playing, said general manager Uli Hoeneß.
What happened? The newly promoted SSV Ulm fielded the same team as they did a week before in a 2-1 win at HSV. Frank Juric was in goal for the Werkself and in front of him a back three of Jens Nowotny, Carsten Ramelow and Robert Kovac. Emerson, Michael Ballack, Ze Roberto and Stefan Beinlich worked their magic in midfield with Oliver Neuville, Ulf Kirsten and Paulo Rink playing up front.
Emerson, Paulo Rink and Ulf Kirsten scored the first three goals in the first 20 minutes. Bayer 04 played "cat and mouse" with their opponents (Kicker online). It was 4-0 at half-time with another goal from Emerson. And if the Sparrows, as Ulm were known in their hometown, hoped the Werkself would ease off to the end of the game then they were disappointed. It only took 20 minutes for Oliver Neuville to score the fifth goal but then the Werkself upped their game again. Four more goals from Ze Roberto (2), Michael Ballack and substitute Bernd Schneider took the score up to 9-0. SSV Ulm netted a consolation goal on 90 minutes. The game ended with a 9-1 scoreline and that remains the biggest win for Bayer 04 in the Bundesliga.
There were celebrations at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin after the match and not just because of the draw for Hertha. There was great joy in the stands – with the exception of the away end – after the final score in Ulm was announced. The Werkself were now level on points with FC Bayern and the goal difference was only five less. That goal difference prevented Bayer 04 becoming champions of Germany first time on the final matchday in Unterhaching. We were only able to overcome the trauma of Unterhaching and the treble runners-up season two years later last season!

Hans Sarpei was born on 28 June 1976 in Tema, Ghana, and came to Germany with his parents at the age of three, where he grew up in Cologne. Even before he was born, his mother and father worked in Hamburg in the import-export sector. There they met an older man who introduced them to German culture and supported them. Out of gratitude, Hans was later given his first name, although this man died before he was born. Hans comes from a sporting family; his older brother Edward and his nephews Hans Nunoo Sarpei and Kingsley Sarpei were or are also professional footballers.

On 3 June 1953, Hans-Josef (‘Sepp’) Kretschmann became the fifth coach in the history of Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Born in Allenstein, East Prussia, on 21 March 1902, the football coach first studied to become a teacher before later switching to football. He took over the Werkself from Franz Strehle, under whom the team twice managed to stay in the 1st Oberliga West. However, Strehle did not extend his contract in Leverkusen after these two very successful years.

After promotion to Bundesliga North 2 in the summer of 1975, Bayer 04 are fighting relegation just eight months later. The club expects full commitment from everyone in this precarious situation. Promotion coach Manfred Rummel is to give up his main job as a teacher at the Mülheim special school and become a full-time coach at Bayer 04. The coach, who is very popular with the team, does not see himself in a position to fulfil the club's request. Despite a 2-0 home win against SpVgg Erkenschwick, Manfred Rummel is put on gardening leave by "mutual agreement".

Jacek Krzynowek was born on 15 May 1976 in Kamiensk, Poland, and grew up as a typical country boy. He spent his childhood less in structured training sessions and more on simple pitches, where he spent hours playing football with older boys. He realised early on that he had exceptional shooting power and enormous stamina. But for a long time, he didn't appreciate just how much talent he had. While others dream of a great career, professional football initially seems like a distant world to him that he only knows from television.
