Match of the month: 25 years ago – Biggest Bundesliga win

Ahead of matchday 25 in the 1999/2000 season, the Werkself are in second place in the Bundesliga two points behind reigning champions Bayern Munich. The champions have been top of the table since matchday 10 and the rest of the league are trying to stay in touch with Bayern. From matchday 24, an exciting race develops between Bayer 04 and FC Bayern that lasts to the end of the season.

On matchday 25, Bayer 04 travel to the newly promoted team from Ulm who are making a very good impression in thirteenth place six points ahead of the drop zone. FC Bayern are away to Hertha Berlin who need every point to secure a UEFA Cup spot.

When both games kick off at 15:30 CET, the Berlin spectators do not imagine they will be looking at the scoreboard much on the day.

The FC Bayern captain, Stefan Effenberg, spoke to the waiting journalists after match: "I picked up on the constant murmur through the crowd. You don't see that every day." Bayern could live with a draw in Berlin but the current form of the Werkself worried the champions: "It's remarkable how Leverkusen are playing, said general manager Uli Hoeneß.

What happened? The newly promoted SSV Ulm fielded the same team as they did a week before in a 2-1 win at HSV. Frank Juric was in goal for the Werkself and in front of him a back three of Jens Nowotny, Carsten Ramelow and Robert Kovac. Emerson, Michael Ballack, Ze Roberto and Stefan Beinlich worked their magic in midfield with Oliver Neuville, Ulf Kirsten and Paulo Rink playing up front.

Emerson, Paulo Rink and Ulf Kirsten scored the first three goals in the first 20 minutes. Bayer 04 played "cat and mouse" with their opponents (Kicker online). It was 4-0 at half-time with another goal from Emerson. And if the Sparrows, as Ulm were known in their hometown, hoped the Werkself would ease off to the end of the game then they were disappointed. It only took 20 minutes for Oliver Neuville to score the fifth goal but then the Werkself upped their game again. Four more goals from Ze Roberto (2), Michael Ballack and substitute Bernd Schneider took the score up to 9-0. SSV Ulm netted a consolation goal on 90 minutes. The game ended with a 9-1 scoreline and that remains the biggest win for Bayer 04 in the Bundesliga.

There were celebrations at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin after the match and not just because of the draw for Hertha. There was great joy in the stands – with the exception of the away end – after the final score in Ulm was announced. The Werkself were now level on points with FC Bayern and the goal difference was only five less. That goal difference prevented Bayer 04 becoming champions of Germany first time on the final matchday in Unterhaching. We were only able to overcome the trauma of Unterhaching and the treble runners-up season two years later last season!

Birthday Boy of the Month 2: Sascha Dum turns 40

Sascha was born on 3 July 1986 in Leverkusen. He is the son of former Bundesliga 2 player Manfred Dum, who mainly scored goals for Union Solingen but also played for FC Saarbrücken, SC Freiburg and Wuppertaler SV. Sascha started playing for the youth teams at HSV Langenfeld at an early age. There, he caught the eye of scouts from Bayer 04 and joined the club at a young age. Following a growth spurt in the U15 team, which forced him to take a nine-month break, the left-footed player finally had the ideal conditions to establish himself in the Bayer 04 youth ranks. Even as an U17 player, he made the leap into the U19 team. Blessed with immense pace, Sascha primarily played in attacking midfield. Not the most technically gifted, but possessing a powerful shot, he found himself training with the first team in the summer of 2005 alongside Gonzalo Castro, while he was still a U19 player.

The Werkself could not have hoped for a better start to the Bundesliga 2 North season in 1976/77. At the end of a week-long training camp in Quickborn, Schleswig-Holstein, coach Willibert Kremer’s side secured two convincing victories over BSC Brunsbüttel (5–0) and TuS Holstein Quickborn (6–0). Following this flying start, Bayer 04 faced a considerably tougher challenge on 23 July 1976 at 19:30 CEST at the Ulrich Haberland Stadium against Bundesliga side Karlsruher SC.
