The three Confed Cup winners Julian Brandt, Benjamin Henrichs and Bernd Leno are in the Germany squad for the World Cup qualifiers for the 2018 tournament in Russia with matches against the Czech Republic (1 September in Prague, 20.45 CET live on RTL) and Norway (4 September in Stuttgart, 20.45 CET live on RTL). Löw announced his squad on Friday.
17 of the Confed Cup winners are in the 24-strong Germany squad. They are joined by established players who were rested for the tournament in Russia. In Group C of the World Cup qualifiers, Germany are clearly ahead of Northern Ireland with six victories so far.
Jonathan Tah has been called up to the U21 squad - the Germany team under coach Stefan Kuntz have a friendly against Hungary on 1 September before the European Championship qualifier against Kosovo four days later. Earlier in the week it was announced that Atakan Akkaynak, Kai Havertz and Sam Schreck have been called up by Germany coach Meikel Schönweitz for the U19 international fixtures in Switzerland (31 August) and in England (5 September).
Bayer 04 head coach Heiko Herrlich will also have to make do without six other players during the international break: Julian Baumgartlinger and Aleksandar Dragovic (both Austria), Admir Mehmedi (Switzerland), Kevin Kampl (Slovenia), Joel Pohjanpalo (Finland) plus Charles Aránguiz (Chile) have also been called up for international duty.

The Werkself need a win in their penultimate match of the season at RB Leipzig on Monday evening (18:00 CEST) to keep their hopes of third place alive until the final day. After Eintracht Frankfurt lost on Saturday, Roberto Pätzold's side can close the gap on their rivals to two points and leave it all to play for next Sunday.

It meant the Swabians leapfrogged the Werkself in the Bundesliga table on the penultimate matchday.

Today sees Bayer 04 go head-to-head with their next direct rivals in the race for Champions League qualification (kick-off 15:30 CEST). Opponents Stuttgart are currently fifth in the table, level on points with the Werkself but one place below them due to a three-goal inferior goal difference. The Black and Reds' record at Bad Cannstatt tells a clearer story: they've not lost at VfB for over 16 years. One important factor in securing what would be three crucial points away from home is Leverkusen's strength on the counter-attack. Whilst Stuttgart are also extremely dangerous going forward, they will be without their captain. Today’s matchday news.
