The award is run by video game developer EA together with the Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL). Wirtz came out ahead of some big-name competition from Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Xavi Simons (RB Leipzig) and Kevin Stöger (Bochum), as well as teammates Alejandro Grimaldo and Jeremie Frimpong.
Wirtz made four Bundesliga appearances in February, providing three assists.
An official Player of the Month award has been handed out in the Bundesliga since the 2018/19 season, with Wirtz’s latest triumph the 10th for a Leverkusen player.

This year - for the third time - the parents of the Bayer 04 youth players from the U8 to U15 age groups once again took part in the WDR Christmas Miracle. Under the motto "Goals against hunger in the world - parents in goal!", they organised their own fundraising campaign to once again actively support the important WDR campaign. The Leverkusen eSports players picked up just one point on Tuesday 16 December in the remaining three matches of the online preliminary round of Showdown Three in the VBL Club Championship 2025/26. During half-time in the Werkself home match against 1. FC Köln, Bayer 04 Sportförderung gGmbH awarded the 19th Volunteering Award for outstanding commitment to football in Leverkusen and the surrounding region. The prize money of €15,000 was shared this year by TuS Roland Bürrig 1887 e.V. and SV Oppum 1910 e.V.
