Birthday boy of the month one: Hans-Jürgen Scheinert is 70

Hans-Jürgen ‘Scheini’ Scheinert was born on 5 October 1954. In his youth he played for the two Lower Rhine clubs TV Voerde and VfB Lohberg. The hard-running defensive midfielder signed for Olympia Bocholt in the Verbandsliga Niederrhein in 1973 and he stayed there for the next two years.

Yes, I'd like to see videos dispalyed.

When Bayer 04 were promoted to the second Bundesliga North in 1975 and the squad extended, Scheini was one of twelve new players to move under the Bayer Cross. He was joined by Fred Bockholt, Peter Klimke and Walter Posner, who together with Scheini formed a big part of the defensive line-up at the Werkself.

In his first season, Scheini played in defensive midfield due to his stamina and running. In the following years he plays more as a defender. Always tough against the opponents and with himself he is aware of his role at Bayer 04 together with his fellow defenders where he tries to prevent conceding goals and also for his team to again and again regain possession. When he'd done that he mostly played the ball to one of his teammates and rarely got involved with the Werkself attack. Nevertheless, he scored nine goals for Bayer 04 in 169 appearances – mainly from free kicks and corners where he often popped up in the opposition box with his aerial strength.

In 1979 he was promoted to the Bundesliga with Bayer 04 but only played 22 games in two years so he decided to move on to second division rivals Fortuna Köln in 1981. In 1984 he moved down a division to Victoria Köln where he ended his playing career.

Up to his retirement he worked for Bayer AG in purchasing.

Dear Scheini, many happy returns at 70! Have a good one and remain healthy.

He took his first steps in football at the two Jena clubs BSG Aufbau and FC Carl Zeiss, the biggest club in his hometown. He played in the second division for six years in the 90s. Since the establishment of the Bundesliga on 28 July 1962 for the 1963/64 season, there have been five Regional Leagues: North, Berlin, West, South-west and South. The champions of those five leagues qualified directly for promotion play-offs that were played in two groups of four teams. That included the two second-placed teams in the West and South-west Regional Leagues. The two runners-up from the North and the South played a qualifier for the eighth place in the promotion games.
