
In April 1979, Hoene – then director of crop protection at Bayer AG and responsible for Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand – was appointed as chairman of the football section at TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen as the successor to Hermann Büchel. A few weeks later, he celebrated promotion to the Bundesliga with Bayer 04. From 1983, Volrath Hoene worked as deputy head of department in the youth and amateur sections at Bayer 04. He was re-elected as head of the football section in 1988 and he experienced the biggest ever success for the Werkself on the European stage when Bayer 04 won the UEFA Cup on 18 May 1998. He also celebrated his silver wedding anniversary on the same day. After leaving the board of the football section ,Volrath Hoene worked for Bayer AG in Hong Kong before later returning to Berlin.


Werkself player Montrell Culbreath and Bayer 04 loanee Francis Onyeka are part of Germany's final squad for the U19 European Championships this summer. The tournament is in Wales from 24 June to 12 July.

Bayer 04 are away to third-division club SV Wehen Wiesbaden in the first round of the 2026/27 DFB Pokal. That was the outcome of the draw on Saturday night, 6 June, at the German Football Museum in Dortmund. The Werkself first round tie will be played between 21 and 24 August. The exact date has yet to be finalised.

Bayer 04 plans for the 2026/27 pre-season continue to take shape. The Werkself will kick off the new season in mid-July with the return to the training ground. The highlight will be the official season opener on 8 August at the BayArena, including a friendly against La Liga club Sevilla. Friendlies in Germany will take the team to neighbouring Monheim, Offenbach and Jena.
