Bayer 04 appoints Leonardo Giammarioli as Head of Internationalization

Bayer 04 has announced the appointment of Leonardo Giammarioli as new Head of Internationalization. The Italian-born executive has nearly two decades of sports business and football industry experience, most recently at Beiersdorf where he was the Global Football Sponsorship Manager for Nivea Men, managing the partnerships with Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool FC among others. Giammarioli has also spent time at AS Roma, Sky Sport Italia and SPORTFIVE in marketing and business development roles during his career. The 42-year-old is set to begin his role out of the Bayer 04 offices in Leverkusen this week leading a three-person department.

“Here at Bayer 04 we have provided good impetus over the last five years as part of our internationalization strategy. We have shown our presence on trips abroad, launched several initiatives and built partnerships,” says Fernando Carro, CEO of Bayer 04 Leverkusen. “In order to give Bayer 04 Leverkusen and the Bundesliga a permanently greater weight in global competition, we must continue to invest in this area in the coming years. We hope that Mr. Giammarioli, his commitment and his expertise will make an important contribution to the implementation of this project.”

“As part of our parent company Bayer, many areas of our club work with an international perspective every day,” says Holger Tromp, Director of Communications, Bayer 04, who heads Bayer 04’s international department. “Leonardo’s background in business development, his experience with sports and corporate structures, combined with his cross-cultural relationships, will be a great asset to our team.”

The filling of the most-recently vacant position comes almost a year after two extremely successful North American friendlies in 2022, including the Bayer 04 Mexico Tour 2022, in which the men's and women's teams traveled to Mexico. The highlight was a sold-out friendly against Toluca FC. Die Werkself also traveled to St. Louis, USA, last November for the inauguration of CITYPARK, the home stadium of the newly-crowned MLS Western Conference champions St. Louis CITY SC. Bayer 04 has also received various awards for its international social media channels and content offerings in other languages.

Werkself Review #M05B04: Strange start, positive ending

They had their hands full in the VAR centre in Cologne: eight goals were scored at the MEWA Arena on Saturday afternoon, but only four of them were allowed in the end as the Werkself and 1. FSV Mainz 05 closed the season with a 2-2 draw. It means Bayer 04 end the 2024/25 campaign as runners-up with 69 points, representing the fourth-best season in the club's history. What's more, the Werkself are now unbeaten away from home in two whole Bundesliga seasons, with their last away defeat coming exactly two years ago on Matchday 34 of the 2022/23 season at VfL Bochum. The Black-and-Reds can continue the record run next season - albeit without Alonso and Tah. Read what else the eventful final game for the head coach and the defensive leader had to offer in the Werkself Review.

Bayer 04’s final game of the 2024/25 Bundesliga season saw VAR drama and produced a new record for away results with a 2-2 draw in Mainz. The hosts had several goals ruled out before Paul Nebel put them ahead. Patrik Schick’s brace then turned things around in the second half before Jonathan Burkardt’s penalty levelled the game again.
