African Player of the Year 2023: Edmond Tapsoba nominated

The African association Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has announced the list of 30 nominees in the vote for African Player of the Year 2023. The nominees include Werkself player Edmond Tapsoba. The winner will be announced at the CAF Awards in Marrakech on 11 December.

Other nominees from the Bundesliga, alongside Edmond Tapsoba from Burkina Faso, are Ramy Bensebaini (Algeria/Borussia Dortmund) and Serhou Guirassy (Guinea/VfB Stuttgart).

Tapsoba recently played his 150th game for Bayer 04 in the 2-1 home win against SC Freiburg. The central defender will be involved in the Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast from 13 January 2024. If selected, Bayer 04 players involved in the competition will also include Amine Adli (Morocco), Victor Boniface (Nigeria) plus Odilon Kossounou (Ivory Coast) in addition to Tapsoba (Burkina Faso). All the national teams of those Leverkusen players have qualified for the AFCON finals.

The Bayer 04 delegation, led by Fernando Carro, CEO, concluded their multi-day trip to Brazil with a visit to the community-based organisation Bola Pra Frente in Rio de Janeiro – founded by former Werkself player Jorginho. During the visit, Bayer 04 committed to extending support for the Bola Pra Frente project for a further five years. In addition, Jorginho, a member of the Brazil 1994 World Cup-winning squad, was named Bayer 04’s second official club legend. With the visit to São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, the club has strengthened the relationships built up over the years in one of Bayer 04’s most important international markets.
