Alonso ahead of #TSGB04: ‘Unknown factors in preparations'

Bayer 04 are on the road again: The Werkself are away to TSG Hoffenheim on Saturday 11 February (kick-off: 15.30 CET) on Bundesliga matchday 20. At the pre-match presence conference ahead of the game in Sinsheim, Bayer 04 head coach Xabi Alonso talked about the Werkself players Nadiem Amiri, Noah Mbamba, Patrik Schick and Charles Aránguiz plus Hoffenheim's new head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo.

The approach to the game at TSG is clear following last Friday’s 1-0 defeat at FC Augsburg: "Now we have to show that we want to win. We know it won't be easy. But we also know what we want and which factors are required against Hoffenheim: To get a win we need good mentality and to be on our toes. There are a lot of points to pick up in the season and we want to start with that tomorrow," said Alonso.

Alonso: "first goal extremely important"

According to the Spaniard, the details on the pitch will be crucial above all else: "Against deep-lying opponents, we have to succeed again in scoring early goals and attacking better in the final third. Therefore, the first goal is extremely important. It's always difficult to come back after going behind."

Alonso also shared his views on Hoffenheim's new head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo and his strategy known from his time at VfB Stuttgart. The Spanish coach: "There are always more question marks and unknown factors in preparations with a change of coaches." In addition, Hoffenheim have strengthened their squad in the winter with the signings of John Anthony Brooks, Thomas Delaney and Kasper Dolberg. Alonso continued: "They have gained a lot of experience and quality both on and off the pitch."

Amiri fit, Schick and Aránguiz sidelined

Xabi Alonso almost has a full squad available in Sinsheim. Nadiem Amiri returns after not travelling to Augsburg due to a muscle problem.

The 41-year-old coach will have to manage without the two outfield players Patrik Schick (illness) and Charles Aránguiz (calf problem). "Charly isn't training with the squad at the moment, he still has pain in a certain area of his calf. Therefore, both we and him need to be patient," explained Alonso before adding: "When Charly's fit, he's a top player of high quality who we definitely need in midfield."

The Spaniard also had words of praise for winter signing Noah Mbamba who has now been training with the Werkself for a month: "We see his strengths and we are happy with him. He has a good mentality and is keen to learn but he obviously still needs time," said Alonso about the 18-year-old before adding: "He can learn a lot from the players in his position and thereby develop his own game. Perhaps he will get his first minutes on the pitch against Hoffenheim tomorrow."

tickets available in Sinsheim

The Werkself are already on the way to Sinsheim. 951 Black and Red fans will be supporting the team at TSG. Tickets are still available at the ground. The away ticket office at the PreZero Arena opens two hours before kick-off.

After the encounter on Matchday 7 of this season’s league phase, the Werkself travel to face the Greek side for the second time in just four weeks for the knockout play-off first leg. The Black and Reds were dominant for large spells in mid-January but lost 2-0 after missing a number of presentable chances. A bitter end to the fifth showdown of the 2025/26 VBL Club Championship as the #B04eSports team failed to take any points in the three remaining matches of the preliminary online round of the fifth and final showdown, missing out on the offline round. They can no longer take points in the overall table.
