After a balanced first half it was the hosts who struck first at the Ulrich Haberland Stadium. Akkaynak got on the end of a good ball and found the back of the FC Köln net to give Bayer 04 the lead.
Following substitutions during the break, Köln improved in the second half. Within 10 minutes the visitors turn the game round with two goals.
Late decider
Instead of an equaliser, a breakaway attack in the closing stages led to FC Köln sealing victory with a third goal. "The lads gave everything right to the end but were unable to find the finishing touch," said coach Markus von Ahlen.
Schalke 04 next up

At the end of the season that position would be enough to qualify for the German Championship semi-finals.

It was a disappointing night in Athens: The Werkself lost 2-0 away to Olympiacos on Matchday 7 in the league phase of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League campaign. In a match that was intense and fiery from the outset, the high-pressing home side made the better start and took the lead through Costinha on two minutes. Although the Werkself had a number of chances to equalise, the clinical Greek side increased the lead to 2-0 shortly before half-time (45+1’). In the second half, Leverkusen once again gave their all and showed total commitment but, despite their best efforts, the Black and Reds were unable to break down the Olympiacos defence on the night.
