17-year-old Clara Fröhlich, is looking forward to the “new challenge” and hopes “to be able to show what she can do in the coming season,” has been training with the Bayer 04 Women’s team since the end of March. SSV Bergisch Born released Fröhlich from training as the club’s fixtures were suspended at the end of last year due to the coronavirus pandemic and then finally cancelled in April. The Remscheid-born player, who has represented Germany from the U15 team up, was playing in the U17 side in the Lower Rhine League.
“Bayer 04 are the first club for Clara in women’s football – and straightaway into the Bundesliga. A great and important step in her development. She has been able to pick up valuable experience up to now. We are certain she will fit into our team,” said Linda Schöttler, Women’s football general manager at Bayer 04.
Head coach Achim Feifel added: “In Clara, we are getting a young and talented player capable of development who is technically gifted and has a lot to offer. Despite her young age, she is very advanced in terms of fitness and we’re sure Clara will strengthen our defensive midfield.”
Viktoria Pinther is set to leave the club at the end of the season. The contract with the 22-year-old has not been renewed. The Austria international joined the Werkself Women last season and made eight league appearances for the Black and Reds. Schöttler: “We thank Viktoria for her time at Bayer 04 and wish her every success in the future on and off the pitch.”

Three goals weren’t enough for the Werkself to beat FC Heidenheim on Saturday. The 3-3 stalemate was Bayer 04’s third Bundesliga draw in a row. After a commanding first half and a two-goal lead, “we didn’t get back into our game,” summarised Mark Flekken, who featured between the sticks for the first time in two months. Patrik Schick once again proved his nose for goal, bagging a brace. He is now the third-most prolific Bundesliga scorer in the club’s history. Despite the squandered points, head coach Kasper Hjulmand remains confident ahead of the final spurt of the season: “We’re ready to overcome this situation.” The Werkself review.
