
Fischer was treasurer from 1978 to 1986 and following that the president of TSV Bayer 0446 years up to 1992. "I always endeavoured to meet the needs of all 16 sections of the club without losing sight of the overall interest of the Turn- und Sportvereinigung Bayer 04," said the former director of Bayer AG after retiring from his post as club president.
Fischer, who was also a member of the DFB advisory committee, felt a particular connection to the football players. His period in office also included the UEFA Cup win in 1988. As other high points in his 14 years on the club board he lists "the Olympic victory for fencer Arnd Schmidt, the dominant position of Heiko Henkel in international high jumping and the good performances by our basketball team in the Europa League."
Within the whole club with over 10,000 members, children's, youth and amateur sports as well as the disabled sports section were particularly close to Fischer's heart. As the treasurer and president of TSV Bayer 04, it was also important to Fischer, "that we improved the infrastructure and established a solid base for the future." The extension of the Ulrich Haberland Stadium from the middle to the end of the 1980s and the Kurt Rieß facility happened under his watch.
After retirement, Gert-Achim Fischer remained closely involved with the club that he belonged to for over 40 years.

Following the final match of the 2025/26 season, the prevailing feeling was naturally one of disappointment after missing out on qualification for the Champions League. The Werkself finished the Bundesliga in sixth place, meaning they'll start the 2026/27 campaign in the Europa League. "But to talk negatively about everything now because of that would be wrong," stressed captain Robert Andrich following the final game, knowing that the past year at Bayer 04 was marked, more than almost any other, by the start of a new era and the courage to change – and in particular, the belief in a positive direction. The Bayer 04 Women’s squad for the coming season is continuing to take shape: Centre-back Emily Wallrabenstein has moved to Leverkusen from Eintracht Frankfurt’s reserve team, who play in the Women’s Bundesliga 2. The 19-year-old has penned a contract until 30 June 2028.

Bayer 04 will be preparing young talents for a potential sporting career in an even more systematic way in future. The club is breaking new ground to help develop their academic, social and personal skills as well. With the ‘Haus der Talente' or 'Talent House’, Bayer 04 Leverkusen Fußball GmbH is creating a new centre for the development of young athletes in a central location in Leverkusen. Once completed – expected to be in the summer of 2027 – the project will be run in partnership with TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen e.V.
