His cheerful disposition is infectious: There is hardly a day where Wendell Nascimento Borges does not greet you with a smile. And that appears to have a positive effect on his performances: The left-back has played more than 160 Bundesliga games for the Werkself since his move from Grêmio Porto Alegre in 2014 – more than every other Brazilian before him. And there is no end in sight after Wendell only extended his contract to 2022 in June 2020: "Zé Roberto said to me back then that Bayer 04 is a club where I can be happy," reported the left-footer with a beaming smile. "He didn't promise too much. This club has become my family."

The 28-year-old made 250 appearances for the Werkself – and that is more than other player from the country of the five-time World Cup winners.
