‘Pala’, who joined Bayer 04 at the start of 2020, had an outstanding first six months at Leverkusen. He missed the first three league games due to a suspension from his time at River Plate. After that he was a victim of the good Bayer 04 performances at that stage. There are no doubts about the quality of the midfielder who won the Copa Libertadores – the South American equivalent of the Champions League – with River Plate in 2018. Palacios combines aggressive play against the ball with creative ability. The shirt number 25, once worn by Bernd Schneider, is an incentive for him: "It's an honour and responsibility to wear this shirt."

Eight Werkself stars nominated for Team of the Season
The German Football League (DFL) has launched the vote for the Bundesliga Team of the Season. As of now, fans of the Werkself can select no fewer than eight Bayer 04 players in the top XI of the 2023/24 campaign: on the shortlist are Lukas Hradecky, Jonathan Tah, Jeremie Frimpong, Alejandro Grimaldo, Granit Xhaka, Exequiel Palacios, Florian Wirtz and Victor Boniface. Voting closes on Monday 22 April at 9:00 CEST.

Palacios withdraws from Argentina squad with muscular problems
Exequiel Palacios will not join up with the Argentina squad for their friendlies in the USA against El Salvador (23 March in Philadelphia) and Costa Rica (27 March in Los Angeles). The Bayer 04 midfielder has withdrawn from the national team due to muscular problems in his right thigh, following consultation with the Argentinian Football Association.

Palacios sidelined, good news for Frimpong
Bayer 04 will have to manage without World Cup winner Exequiel Palacios. The midfielder suffered a muscle injury in his right thigh during the top game away to RB Leipzig on Bundesliga Matchday 18 on Saturday night. That was the outcome of an MRI examination the day after the 3-2 away win for the Werkself and it means the 25-year-old Argentinian will have to watch from the sidelines for the time being.

Bayer 04 agree contract extension with World Cup winner Palacios
Bayer 04 Leverkusen have agreed to extend the contract with Argentinian World Cup winner Exequiel Palacios due to run out in the summer of 2025. The midfielder has penned a new deal to 30 June 2028 with the Werkself who he joined from River Plate at the start of 2020.
