The idea behind it: Parents donated a set sum for every goal scored by their son's team over the past few weeks. The coaches and other staff at the Performance Centre also joined in. An impressive €2,200 was raised – and it was presented to WDR at the weekend.
The players of the Leverkusen U8 team, together with their parents and representing all players and parents at the Kurtekotten Performance Centre, were invited to the WDR studios in Düsseldorf on Sunday morning.
Following the presentation of the donation and a live interview with radio presenter Thomas Bug there was an opportunity to have a shot at the goal brought by the Bayer 04 U8s for a small donation – and that added an extra €200 to the total raised.
Rüdiger Vollborn has been at the club for 40 years, he holds the record number of Bundesliga appearances for the club (401) and is the only Bayer 04 player to have won both the UEFA Cup (1988) and the DFB Pokal (1993). And the Berliner stayed with the Werkself after ending his impressive playing career as he worked as a goalkeeping coach for the following nine years. Vollborn now works under the Bayer Cross as a fan liaison officer and club archivist. A record-breaking year ends for the Bayer 04 Women. Fourth place, 13 wins and 43 points in the 2024/25 campaign - the Werkself have never been so good in the Bundesliga.
