The team, led by head coach and former Bayer 04 player Christian Wörns, took an early lead thanks to Francis Onyeka’s goal. On 15 minutes, Germany extended their lead to 2–0 thanks to a Danish own goal, with the third goal following just after the half-hour mark (32’). Goals on 39 and 52 minutes saw the Scandinavians reduce the deficit to 3-2, but a penalty – won by Montrell Culbreath – took the score to 4–2 (61'). Denmark had the final say in the match on 72 minutes; there were no further goals, so the Germany U19s won 4–3 to kick off the tournament, which is being played in Wales from 24 June to 12 July. Culbreath was substituted on 65 minutes, and Onyeka played the full 90 minutes.
