Women celebrate end of training camp with convincing win over Slovan Liberec

Bayer 04 Women rounded off their one-week training camp in the Upper Palatinate with their second friendly win of pre-season. Coach Roberto Pätzold's side beat Czech top-flight outfit Slovan Liberec 6-0 in a match consisting of 4 x 30 minutes. Maja Sternad (8'), Caroline Kehrer (55'), Natasha Kowalski (67', 84') with two direct free kicks, Valentina Mädl (97') and Justine Brandau (107') scored the goals for Leverkusen at 1.FC Rieden's Fenstertechnik-Weinfurtner-Arena.
Sieg für die Werkself

On his 47th birthday, Pätzold had all first-team players at his disposal with the exception of goalkeeper Rafaela Borggräfe, Lumbardha Misini and Claudia Wenger. Jana Lindner from the U23 team was again part of the squad on the sixth and penultimate day of the training camp in Rieden.

early lead through STErnad

The Werkself, wearing the new away kit for the first time, dominated from the start at the Rieden stadium. Summer signing Sternad netted at the second attempt from a corner to open the scoring after just eight minutes. Shortly after that, Selina Ostermeier missed the chance to double the lead from a corner from the other side. Not much happened in front of either goal from then until the first of three breaks. The next opportunity fell to Vanessa Fudalla, whose powerful free kick from 30 metres was saved by the Liberec goalkeeper. Bayer 04 continued to dominate proceedings until the second interval - and were rewarded for their efforts when Sana Coskun set up Kehrer to make it 2-0 (55'). Goalkeeper Charlotte Voll was then called into action to turn a shot onto the post and prevent the visitors from getting back into the game.

Jubel über die Führung der Werkself

Seven minutes after the restart, Kowalski made it 3-0 with a free kick as Leverkusen converted their clear dominance into goals. Carlotta Wamser missed the chance to get on the scoresheet shortly after, but the Werkself defended their lead comfortably, with Liberec only looking threatening from set pieces. Kowalski wasn't done and scored a second free kick (84'), before Mädl (97') and new signing Brandau (107') netted in the final quarter of the game to make it 6-0.

coming up: week off

On Sunday, the Werkself will leave their training camp and return to Leverkusen. After a week off, part two of preparations for the new Bundesliga season will start on Monday 27 July. The Black-and-Reds' first league match is away to RB Leipzig on 21 to 24 August.

Moreira: Bayer 04 ‘a good place to grow as a player and as a person’

A new team, a new environment, a new challenge—and yet one thing remains the same for Afonso Moreira: his attitude. Total dedication, discipline, and the drive to improve every day have defined the Portuguese player since his early days at Sporting CP. “Even back then, I realized I had to work hard to achieve my goals,” said the 21-year-old. His parents also instilled those values in him from a young age. Values that have driven him ever since, accompanied him to France when he signed for Lyon, and now also form the foundation for his new chapter at Bayer 04. At a media session, the lightning-fast winger spoke about his values, as well as his new teammates, the new coach, and his targets at the club.
