“We had very good and open discussions with Kristina. She will enrich our coaching team not only with her professional expertise but also with her very empathetic nature,” said Achim Feifel, sporting director of the Bayer 04 Women’s team: “She has a wealth of practical experience both as a player and as a coach; she embarked on her coaching career early on and has already worked in many different areas within the game. She also brings a wealth of expertise in the areas of match and individual analysis, particularly in the individual development of players. We are delighted she is returning to Bayer 04 in this new role.”
In the 2015/16 season, Sundov, who has 58 caps for her country, made 23 appearances for Bayer 04 and scored four goals. She then moved to FC Basel in the Swiss Women’s Super League. There, she played 150 matches until the end of her playing career in 2023, before taking on the role of assistant coach. She served as caretaker manager of the Basel women’s team in the autumn of 2025.
“I’m very happy to be back in Leverkusen. I have very fond memories of my first spell here and have closely followed the club’s development since then. The club has high ambitions, which I share,” says Sundov: “Through my previous roles, I have gained a wealth of valuable experience, which I now want to put to the best possible use. I’m looking forward to being back here and will do everything I can to ensure we achieve our goals together.”
Ten years after retiring as a player, Kristina Sundov is returning to the Bayer 04 Women’s team as assistant coach. The 39-year-old former Croatia international takes over from Remzi Kahraman, who has taken up a new challenge abroad. She has been given a contract to 30 June 2028.

Issa Traoré is moving from Bayer 04 Leverkusen to Slovakian top-flight side AS Trencin. The club has loaned the centre-back out for one year to this year’s ninth-placed team in the Slovakian league.

Assistant coach Remzi Kahraman is leaving the Bayer 04 Women’s team with immediate effect to take up a new challenge abroad. The club has agreed to the 31-year-old’s request to leave, although his contract was originally due to run until 2027. A decision on his successor will be announced shortly.

At the U19 European Championship in Wales, the Germany U19 national team lost their third and final group match 4-0 to Spain. Several regulars, including Bayer 04 players Montrell Culbreath and Francis Onyeka (on loan to SV Elversberg), who had combined for four goals and assists in the two previous victories, did not feature,. Germany had already secured their place in the semi-finals with a game to spare.
