Rolfes on historic Youth League opportunity: ‘I have every confidence in the lads’

In the sixth and final match of the league phase of the UEFA Youth League 2025/26, the Bayer 04 U19s have a great opportunity to advance to the knockout phase of Europe’s most prestigious youth competition for the first time. To achieve that under their own steam, they will need a win against Newcastle United at the Ulrich Haberland Stadium on Wednesday, 10 December (kick-off: 14:00 CET/ free admission). In an interview with bayer04.de, managing director sport Simon Rolfes analyses the team's performances so far and their special situation. And the 43-year-old reveals what he would be happy to do without on the day of the match.
Simon Rolfes

Simon, there's a good chance of achieving something historic. How big do you think that is looking at the table?

Rolfes: Of course, the team has been handicapped by the many call-ups to the first team in the last two games. But before that, they did very, very well in the first three matches (see results below, ed.). We have every chance, absolutely if we win. I have every confidence in the lads.

Have you tried your hand at calculating the possible permutations over the past few days?

Rolfes: Yes, I had a look straight after the game in Manchester.(laughs) I also looked at the table from last year to see how many points were enough. Sure, we could go through with a point against Newcastle United. But we're playing to win here at home.

Tabelle UEFA Youth League

As a former player, how do you rate the situation ahead of facing Newcastle United, an opponent that has no points yet and has already been eliminated?

Rolfes: You always have to have maximum respect for your opponent. Not fear, but respect. Because if you lose that, it becomes difficult to win games. Newcastle United, for example, only just lost to Barcelona (2-3, ed.). And they will want to put in a good performance in their last Youth League game. That's why we'll have to be at our best.

There were wins against FC Copenhagen and against PSV, plus a draw against PSG. These three are big clubs in their countries. How did you feel our team did in those games?

Rolfes: Let's not forget we could have won against PSG with a bit of luck just before the end of the game. The team has a lot of potential. They play good football with a clear structure in their own game and show great dynamism and intensity. That's what you need at this absolute top level of European youth football.

How do you rate the impact of coach Kevin Brok, who took over in mid-September?

Rolfes: Of course, it wasn't easy for Kevin to join the team for the first time this season. That's challenging for any coach, regardless of the level. But he has a lot of energy and I'm sure he'll get the lads back in the right frame of mind for Wednesday and push them to the limit.

U19-Trainer Kevin Brok

Clubs like Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Newcastle United no longer have a chance of reaching the knockout phase. What would progression mean for Bayer 04 as a club?

Rolfes: It would be very important. Of course, we're not satisfied with having always missed out on the knockout phase before. We want to go through on a regular basis. That’s our ambition. We want to play a more dominant role in the coming years and develop more top talents into top players.

The fact we will most likely have to get a result against Newcastle United is mainly due to the games at Benfica and Manchester City you mentioned at the beginning.

Rolfes: That's right. Of course, the issue of personnel plays a not insignificant role. In Manchester, 13 outfield players in the senior squad were unavailable. Inevitably, some of the youngsters had to step up. Even if that's a shame for the U19s at the moment, the first team takes absolute priority.

How are such personnel decisions made at the club?

Rolfes: In the end, Kasper Hjulmand and I make the decision together, always in close dialogue with those responsible for the youngsters. Of course, we try to ensure the U19s also have a good team on the pitch and that the lads get as much playing time as possible. But it's always a balancing act, because we also want to introduce the young, very talented players to the first team squad. Overall, we are on the right track. Progress can be recognised, for example in the physical area. But we mustn't forget that the first team has also made huge strides recently. A few years ago, we were 27th in the European rankings; we are currently eighth. Of course, the transition from the junior team to the senior squad is becoming more difficult.

It will depend on a good balance between stability and attackSimon Rolfes

Let's take a final look at Wednesday. How can the historic coup be achieved?

Rolfes: To put it in the words of Otto Rehhagel: You need a controlled offence. (laughs) It will depend on a good balance between stability and attack. Our aim with all teams is to actively shape the game and control the action with confident, fast passing. If we can do that, I'm very optimistic we'll win - and fortunately we won't have to think about permutations after the final whistle any more.(laughs)

FC Copenhagen 0-2 Bayer 04

Bayer 04 3-2 PSV Eindhoven
