A panel discussion followed by a Q&A session will focus on the impact of Nazi rule on sport. How did football and club life change? How did TuS 04 Leverkusen and Bayer 04 respond? What role did Bayer AG play? And how is this part of history dealt with today? We will explore these questions together. The discussion will examine developments in German football as well as the local history of Leverkusen. Stadium announcer Tobias Ufer will moderate the evening’s proceedings.
Julian Rieck is on hand as an expert. The political scientist and historian is a research associate at the non-profit company ‘what matters’. The organisation has been running educational projects in sport for many years and advises numerous sports clubs and associations. Rieck’s academic work focuses primarily on the political history of football and National Socialism. He has also curated several exhibitions on football under National Socialism.
Also taking part in the panel discussion is Sarah Hartwich from Bayer AG. Within the ‘Democratic engagement’ division, she is committed to democratic participation and the culture of remembrance. Since 2022, she has been working intensively on coming to terms with the company’s history and communicating historical contexts. In doing so, she works closely with the Hans and Berthold Finkelstein Foundation, which was established by Bayer in 2023.
The evening offers an opportunity to learn more about the history of football, Leverkusen and Bayer AG during the Nazi era. At the same time, it provides a space for different perspectives and for shared discussion.
Following the discussion, members of the audience are warmly invited to ask their own questions and join in the discussion. An interesting evening lies in store.
