The eight group runners-up in the UEFA Europa League were in Pot 1; the balls for the teams finishing third in the groups in the UEFA Champions League – including Bayer 04 – were in Pot 2. Clubs from the same football association cannot play each other at this stage.
Simon Rolfes, Bayer 04 sporting managing director, said: "A French opponent was to be expected in the draw. And now it is actually AS Monaco. I think it's an attractive draw. We have met in Europe several times and they have always been tight and closely fought games. Monaco are currently fifth in the French league and again in the race for the top spots. They are a strong attacking side with a very good squad and our fans can look forward to seeing them at the BayArena. I expect two equally contested games but our target is obviously to go through to the Round of 16 in the Europa League. A highly interesting competition as these play-offs show – with quality teams facing each other. Of course, we are particularly looking forward to meeting up with Kevin Volland. That in itself makes this clash special."

Today sees Bayer 04 go head-to-head with their next direct rivals in the race for Champions League qualification (kick-off 15:30 CEST). Opponents Stuttgart are currently fifth in the table, level on points with the Werkself but one place below them due to a three-goal inferior goal difference.
