DFB Cup: Werkself face Hamburg state cup winners in the first round

The Werkself kick off the 2020/21 DFB Cup campaign with a tie against the winners of the Hamburg state cup. That was the outcome of the draw held early on Sunday evening broadcast on the ARD Sportschau with DFB president Fritz Keller and DFB deputy general secretary Heike Ullrich picking out the teams. The opponents for Peter Bosz’s team will be decided at the ‘Amateurs finals day’ on 22 August.

The cup competition organised by the Hamburg state association could not be completed due to the coronavirus pandemic. FC Eintracht Norderstedt and Altona 93 (both Regional League clubs), FC Teutonia 05 Ottensen, SV Rugenbergen, TSV Sasel und HSV Barmbek-Uhlenhorst (all Oberliga), SV Halstenbek-Rellingen and ASV Hamburg (both Landesliga) are in the quarter-finals.

“It was an unusual sort of draw. Even though we don’t know who we’ll meet, we can look forward to an interesting first round. An away game at a lower league club - that has everything that makes up a classic first round cup tie. We are very ambitious as we were last season. We definitely want to get through this round,” said Simon Rolfes.

The first round of the DFB Cup will be played from 11 to 14 September.

Matchday news #B04FCSP: DFB Pokal quarter-final against battling St. Pauli

As in the past two years, the Werkself are aiming to come out on top in the DFB Pokal quarter-finals on Tuesday night, 3 February (kick-off: 20:45 CET). With eleven home games in a row without defeat against the Kiezkicker, the Black and Reds go into the floodlit match in confident mood. But the Pokal, as is often said, has its own magic and the team from the Millerntor has much more to offer than the current 17th place in the Bundesliga would suggest. After all, Bayer 04 are one of the big German teams the combative Hamburgers have already made life difficult for this season. The matchday news.
