For the Kölner Stadt Anzeiger , Charles Aránguiz was man of the match as he never stopped running, threw himself into every challenge and also made some pinpoint passes. He played a decisive role in ensuring no goals conceded brought a reward of at least one point." The conclusion of the Stadt Anzeiger: "A deserved draw for both sides in a match typical of this venue. Here you can only fight passion with passion, even if that means running the risk of the beautiful game suffering and the match ending in a 0-0 draw as on this occasion. The two teams can live with that."
The Bild analysis reads: "A hard-fought game with lots of fouls and few chances with Freiburg being shown seven yellow cards (Leverkusen one). No team has picked up so many picked bookings in a Bundesliga match since 2009 – including SC themselves. There was confrontation in added time. Referee Robert Kampka left the Freiburg pitch to a chorus of whistles."
The Rheinische Post writes: "The match in the Black Forest ended in a fiery 0-0 draw with Bayer 04 dominating for large periods without looking dangerous. … There was a warm reception for Herrlich. 'Welcome home' was the greeting from the stadium announcer for the Leverkusen coach who left SC Freiburg as a young player to join Bayer Leverkusen where his professional career took off."
Under the headline, 'Freiburg terriers blunt Bayer attack', the Express declares: "A footballing clash instead of 'top game'at the Schwarzwald Stadium. What the spectators – including Germany coach Jogi Löw (58) – saw was, above all, a battle of attrition. The Freiburg 'terriers' upset Bayer's artists on the ball with their rough approach. The result: Referee Robert Kampka had to show the yellow card to Freiburg seven times. No team in a Bundesliga match has picked up so many yellow cards since 2009. This was the first time in 25 games the Werkself have failed to score a goal. At the same time, Bayer have only suffered one defeat in the last 18 competitive matches and are unbeaten on the road in the last nine games."
The Süddeutsche Zeitung observes: "When the press conference was over and the two coaches parted on good terms there was much shaking of the head in the Freiburg press room. It had just become known that the 0-0 draw between Freiburg and Bayer Leverkusen had been described on one website as a 'horror show'and that was doing the rounds on the Internet. However, that was a distortion. In reality, the match proves that a game doesn't have to have goals to be entertaining. At least, not if it's played with tempo as the 22 players did on the day."
The Kicker observes: "Thanks to a battling performance, SC Freiburg held Bayer Leverkusen to a 0-0 draw. SCF took the fight out of the Rhinelanders in a match with few clear-cut chances through determined challenges. … In the end it produced a draw that fitted the performance."
