Seoane: “Focus on the points we can influence ourselves”

Bayer 04 round off a busy week with a trip to the capital to take on Hertha Berlin on Saturday, 10 September (15:30 CEST). Head coach Gerardo Seoane is expecting greater determination in the clash with the capital club.

The Werkself will be playing in front of over 40,000 at the Olympiastadion but with just three points from the first five league games of the campaign. “We’re taking on the challenges,” Seoane stressed at his pre-match press conference. “Our focus lies 100 per cent on the points we can influence ourselves.”

“A feeling of success the most important”

The Swiss coach can call upon the same players he had available in the Champions League game against Club Brugge during the week. With over 1,200 fans making the trip from Leverkusen to Berlin, they want to reflect upon the positive aspects from the second half against the Belgians. “We were a lot more straightforward in how we got forward. We were also more compact in defence,” Seoane stated. “It’s about building on that.”

He added the need to promote the positive things there were from the last two defeats. “We have to go by our strengths and talk about the points that bring us results.” Seoane also called for a “greater feeling of solidarity” in the team and to iron out mistakes. And when mistakes do happen, we have to “have enough attacking action to still be able to win the game.”

The 43-year-old is aware that “a feeling of success is the most important thing. We’re obviously not happy with the results so far.“ As to the question of his own findings in the current situation, Seoane answered: “At the end of the day, for me it's about putting personal feelings aside and first and foremost finding solutions for the team.”
