Leon Bailey has been voted the best newcomer of the 2017/18 season by his fellow Bundesliga pros. With 29.3 per cent of the votes cast, the 'Silver Arrow' award from the players' union 'Vereinigung der Vertragsfußballspieler e.V.' (VDV) this year goes to the Werkself number nine.

The 20-year-old Jamaican was clearly ahead of Eintracht Frankfurt's Marius Wolf (13 per cent) and Borussia Dortmund's Michy Batshuayi (7.4 per cent) in the VDV vote. In the previous vote, it was Ousmane Dembélé – now at Barcelona – who won out against Bayer 04 pro Kai Havertz.

ONLY Bayer 04 pro in team of the season

Bailey, who scored nine goals and provided six assists for Bayer 04 in the Bundesliga last term, was also named in the 'VDV Team of the Season'by his fellow professionals – along with the two defenders Philipp Max (FC Augsburg) and Naldo (Schalke 04) and midfielder Naby Keïta (RB Leipzig) he was one of only four non Bayern Munich players in the line-up. Bailey received 41.9 per cent of the votes.

Top goalscorer Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich) was awarded the 'Silver Boot' for the best player of the season and the coaches' 'Silver Bench' award went to Jupp Heynckes (Bayern Munich).

Matchday news #VfBB04: Taking the next big step with the full weight of our fans behind us

Today sees Bayer 04 go head-to-head with their next direct rivals in the race for Champions League qualification (kick-off 15:30 CEST). Opponents Stuttgart are currently fifth in the table, level on points with the Werkself but one place below them due to a three-goal inferior goal difference. The Black and Reds' record at Bad Cannstatt tells a clearer story: they've not lost at VfB for over 16 years. One important factor in securing what would be three crucial points away from home is Leverkusen's strength on the counter-attack. Whilst Stuttgart are also extremely dangerous going forward, they will be without their captain. Today’s matchday news.

Our next opponents: VfB still have their fate in their own hands

It's a thrilling situation: as the season draws to a close, Stuttgart and Bayer 04 are heading into the home stretch almost neck and neck. After 32 games, with 17 wins, seven draws and eight defeats each, both teams are on 58 points. Even in terms of goals scored, VfB and the Werkself are level on 66. The Black and Reds have conceded just three fewer goals (43) than their rivals (46), which is why they sit one place behind fourth-placed Leverkusen. This Saturday, 9 May (kick-off: 15.30 CEST), the two teams go head to head at the MHP Arena in Stuttgart. The lowdown on our next opponents.
