The pre-season will start under head coach Xabi Alonso on 10 July. And now the opponents for the first game in the 2023/24 Bundesliga campaign are known: RB Leipzig. The game at the BayArena against the current DFB Cup holders is followed a week later by an away match in Mönchengladbach.
The first clash with the champions Bayern Munich is an away game on matchday four (15 to 17 September). The first derby of the season against FC Köln is at the BayArena on matchday seven (6 to 8 October).
The final Bundesliga matchday in 2023 will be played on 19 and 20 December. The Werkself are at home to VfL Bochum. The Bundesliga returns after the winter break on 12 to 14 January. The first opponents for the Werkself in the New Year at the end of the Hinrunde are FC Augsburg.

After an early but brief setback in the form of an offside goal by Ivan Perisic for the visitors (5'), the Werkself took control and created numerous good chances in the first half. Leverkusen took a deserved lead after the break in the 65th minute through Christian Kofane. However, PSV's Ismael Saibari replied a few minutes later to level at 1-1 (72').
