After the games against Mainz and Bielefeld, the Werkself face another opponent involved in the relegation battle within a few weeks. "That means Hertha need a win – exactly like we do. It will be a tough battle for the points," declared head coach Peter Bosz as he expects an "intense encounter." The Dutchman set out a clear target at the pre-match press conference: "We're going to Berlin to win the game."
With the Old Lady from the capital, Bayer 04 are again facing an opponent whose approach is more defensive. "We found it difficult in games like that recently," admitted Bosz but he believes: "If we play good football again and defend well then it will be easier for us."
The Werkself head coach believes stability and consistency are crucial in this respect. "Of course, we want to end the rollercoaster ride of results. We analyse every game – even when we don't create chances we know what we have to work on. However, that wasn't the case against Bielefeld last week. We were unable to land the crucial blow in the last third. We're working on that. It's not easy. But at least we recognise the reason for it."
One aspect worked on this week is the fact that the first opportunity for the opponents has gone in recently. "It's obviously incredibly frustrating if you don't start badly but miss your first opportunity to take the lead. We have to defend better and, above all, be better organised in our overall defending," demanded Bosz.
Sven Bender could again be an option for the defence on Sunday. Whether the 31-year-old returns to the squad against Hertha after injury will be decided on Saturday after the final pre-match training session. Bosz did have good news about Paulinho. The Brazilian was able to complete parts of full training this week after recovering from a torn cruciate – he put in 30 minutes on Friday. "A very good sign for the lad but also for the team. He was able to join in passing drills and games on small-sized pitches but he's not allowed to get involved in tackles as yet," reported Bosz.
The possible call-up for Florian Wirtz to the Germany senior squad was also discussed at the press conference. "I can well imagine he will be called up," said the Werkself head coach, "because he's doing really well with us. Flo is just 17 years old and is one of our most solid players. I've always said his performances are something special for his age. You can also see in him in one or two games that the season is long but he nevertheless always has incredible quality. I can easily understand it if he does get called up."

The Werkself impressed in the 4-0 home win over FC St. Pauli with a performance that pleased head coach Kasper Hjulmand that had previously being missing and which he now wants to "use as a boost". Defenders Jarell Quansah and Edmond Tapsoba in particular once again stood firm at the back and scored at the other end - the latter now has the most goal involvements by a centre-back in the top five leagues. However, the Bayer 04 players are already looking forward to the forthcoming fixtures with a hunger for success and optimism. The Werkself review of the game on Carnival Saturday.
