Torn cruciate – Paulinho sidelined for months

Bayer 04 have been hit by a serious injury ahead of the DFB Cup final against Bayern Munich on Saturday, 4 July (kick-off: 20.00 CET) in Berlin. Paulinho suffered a torn cruciate in his right knee in full training on Tuesday. The 19-year-old will be out of action for several months.

The Brazilian offensive player will undergo an operation in Innsbruck on Friday led by Professor Christian Fink. "It's an incredible shame and almost tragic that Paulinho cannot be part of the highlight of the season in Berlin and also misses the Europa League in August," said sporting director Simon Rolfes. "His bad injury gives us even more motivation to win the cup at the weekend for him as well. We wish him every strength and a quick recovery."

Paulinho was signed in the summer of 2018 from the Brazilian top-flight club Vasco De Gama. The midfielder made 19 appearances for the Werkself this season, scoring three goals and providing two assists.
