‘Rudi recounts’…: Vollborn on Bayer 04 May highlights

Rüdiger Vollborn has been at the club for nearly 40 years, he has the record number of Bundesliga appearances for the club (401) and is the only Bayer 04 player to have won both the UEFA Cup (1988) and the DFB Cup (1993). And the Berliner stayed with the Werkself after ending his impressive playing career as he worked as a goalkeeping coach for the following nine years. Vollborn now works under the Bayer Cross as a fan liaison officer and club archivist. From February 2021, the personalised Black and Red lexicon takes Werkself fans under the heading of 'Rudi recounts...' on a brief trip through the history of Bayer 04 every month...

Vollborn looks back at goals, matches, personalities and stories away from the pitch from the Bayer 04 club history. For the month of May, the Leverkusen legend includes highly interesting TV-highlights of a defensive battle against the Royal Blues and the biggest Bundesliga home win to date. For the month of May, the Leverkusen legend presents highly interesting TV-highlights of two Werkself games from 1980 and 2002 , which provided salvation for the Black and Reds.

Also for the month of May: Rudi’s emotional appreciation of Lars Bender who is leaving Bayer 04 in the summer after twelve years as he retires from professional football. #B04eSports: Leverkusen hunger for DFB ePokal trophy

The #B04eSports players now have the next chance to win a trophy. After their elimination in the quarter-finals of the VBL Club Championship Final 2025/26, the German club championship, Marc and Sean Landwehr will compete with seven other teams in the finals of the DFB-ePokal 2026 with prize money totalling €65,000. The "highly motivated" Leverkusen team will face the defending champions FOKUS with well-known influencer Elias ‘EliasN97’ Nerlich in the quarter-finals in Frankfurt on Friday, 20 March (from 18:15 CET). The semi-finals and final will be played on Saturday, 21 March.

Bayer 04 host Bayern Munich in the semi-finals of the 2025/26 DFB Pokal. The tie will be played on Wednesday, 22 April 2026, at the BayArena with the kick-off at 20:45 CEST. Information on ticket sales.

Werkself review #ARSB04: ‘Gain important experience from these twelve games’

Hopes were high but disappointment was evident at the end of the second leg of the Round of 16 of UEFA Champions League 2025/26 with the Werkself losing 2-0 to clinical hosts Arsenal after a 1-1 draw in the first leg. Although this marks the end of the journey in the UCL this term the realisation remains that Bayer 04 are "not as far away as it might feel right now", as head coach Kasper Hjulmand said after the game.
