‘Rudi recounts…’: Vollborn on Bayer 04 February highlights

Rüdiger Vollborn has been at the club for 40 years, he holds the record number of Bundesliga appearances for the club (401) and is the only Bayer 04 player to have won both the UEFA Cup (1988) and the DFB Cup (1993). And the Berliner stayed with the Werkself after ending his impressive playing career as he worked as a goalkeeping coach for the following nine years. Vollborn now works under the Bayer Cross as a fan liaison officer and club archivist. From February 2021, the personalised Black and Red lexicon takes Werkself fans under the heading of 'Rudi recounts...' on a brief trip through the history of Bayer 04 every month...

Vollborn looks back at goals, matches, personalities and stories away from the pitch from the Bayer 04 club history. For the month of February, the Leverkusen legend has included a video in honour of the recently passed Willibert Kremer and he remembers with emotion the coach who took the Werkself up in 1979.

Also included in the month of February: Information on the first Bayer 04 honorary president, a scandal at the Haberland Stadium plus the best goals of the month scored by Chicharito, Wolfgang Vöge and Co. Click HERE for all the articles.

“Rudi invites”: Fascinating insights ‘from being founded to rise to the top’

Once again, well over 100 Werkself fans were delighted to receive an invitation from the club’s record appearance-maker, Rüdiger Vollborn, to the sold-out Schwadbud at the BayArena. This time, the supporters listened as the club historian provided fascinating, exclusive insights into the period from Bayer 04 being founded in 1904 to the club’s promotion to the Bundesliga in 1979. A journey through time is also planned for the upcoming ‘Rudi lädt ein’ event in early November – this time focusing on the years of the Nazi regime.

‘That’s the connection we should be fostering’: Maza visits Birkenberg soccer school

Happy children’s faces at the SSV Lützenkirchen training ground: For the 25th time, the Birkenberg soccer school – organised by SportBund Leverkusen – offered participating youngsters an exciting holiday activity. Meeting a Bayer 04 player has now become a cherished tradition. This time, Ibrahim Maza visited the 150 children and spoke to them about his World Cup experiences, amongst other things. “It’s always lovely to see the children’s enthusiasm for football,” said the 20-year-old, after bringing a sparkle to many eyes with selfies and autographs.

DFB Pokal followed by Bundesliga and Europa League: Huge demand for tickets for home and away matches

Thanks in part to the tremendous support from the sold-out away end, Bayer 04 comfortably progressed to the DFB Pokal second round at the weekend with a 4–0 away win at SV Wehen Wiesbaden. 4,000 fans travelled with the Werkself to Hessen – ensuring an all-round successful start to the 2026/27 competitive season. Looking ahead to the coming weeks and months, fans are eagerly anticipating the next home and away matches, as ticket sales to date show. Kicking off the new season together: Carro, Rolfes, Martínez and players at fan club meet-up

One day after the successful DFB Pokal first round tie at SV Wehen Wiesbaden (4–0), the mood was understandably really good: Over 400 Bayer 04 supporters gathered on Sunday, 23 August, for the annual fan club meet-up at the BayArena and got in the mood for the new season through direct and informal discussions with Bayer 04 management, head coach Carles Martínez and Werkself players.
