All Werkself fans will remember the last minute strike for a long time: On the final matchday, the Werkself number two produced an absolute masterpiece on 97 minutes in the home game against SC Freiburg. With seconds to play, the Argentina international shot from just inside the opposition half into an empty net to secure a 2-1 victory. It is Rudi Völler’s farewell goal and at the same time the perfect conclusion to a successful season in 2021/22. Congratulations, Pala!

While the Germany U17s just missed out on progress to the quarter-finals of the European Championships on Wednesday (25 May) in a 4-3 defeat against France on penalties, Bayer 04 youngster Iker Bravo with the Spain team is challenging for a place in the semi-finals tonight. Bravo & Co. take on neighbours Portugal with the kick off at 19.00 CEST.
Spain progressed to the quarter-finals from Group C after two games. The team under coach Julen Guerrero secured 2-0 wins against Turkey and Belgium with Bravo scoring a goal in each of the two matches.
Portugal finished second in Group D with two wins and one defeat. The Portuguese were in scoring mood in the wins against Scotland (5-1) and Sweden (4-2) but they were on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline in the game against Denmark.
Denmark and Serbia face each other in the other quarter-final. The teams from France and the Netherlands have already qualified. A victory for Bravo and his teammates would put them through against France. All the semi-final matches will be played on Sunday 29 May. There will be live streams of every match at uefa.tv.
Bayer 04 today congratulate Dominick Drexler on his 32nd birthday. The current Schalke 04 player signed for Leverkusen in 2007 from the Bonner SC U17s. The midfielder played in for the Werkself U19 and Reserve teams before moving on to Rot-Weiß Erfurt in 2010. The 6 foot 1 Drexler also played for Greuther Fürth, Holstein Kiel and FC Köln before joining the Blue and Whites last summer. He has recently been able to celebrate promotion to the top-flight. Many happy returns.

It will be a historic and very special moment in front of a full house at the BayArena when the Werkself are presented with the first Meisterschale in the club’s history after the final whistle on the last Bundesliga matchday of the season against FC Augsburg. The fixture is on Saturday, 18 May (kick-off: 15.30 CEST/live on Sky and on Werkself Radio). Ahead of the clash with tenth-placed FCA, head coach Xabi Alonso talked about the trophy presentation as well as the possibility of being the first team to go a whole season unbeaten in the Bundesliga.
