Match of the month: Five years ago – Werkself thrash Frankfurt

On Sunday, 5 May 2019, UEFA Europa League semi-finalists Eintracht Frankfurt came to a sold-out BayArena. Three days after their first leg against Chelsea, Eintracht coach Adi Hütter made four changes to his team. With three games left to go in the Bundesliga campaign, both teams were competing for important points in the race for UEFA Champions League qualification. Frankfurt were in fourth place on 54 points, three above Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayer 04.

Yes, I'd like to see videos dispalyed.

And the Werkself put on a show. The Eintracht defence had no answer up against the attacking whirlwind of Peter Bosz's team, who were really enjoying themselves. Kai Havertz gave them a 1-0 lead as early as the second minute. Eleven minutes later, Julian Brandt increased the advantage to 2-0, but the visitors immediately got one back. However, this goal did nothing to change the fact that only one team was playing in the first half - and that was the Werkself.

Kevin Volland and Wendell each had a great chance before Lucas Alario restored the two-goal cushion with a header in the 24th minute. Five minutes later, Charles Aránguiz increased the lead to 4-1.

And as the Werkself did not let up, Alario got a fifth in the 34th minute. An own goal two minutes later was both the half-time and the final score.
