Alonso led the Werkself to the Bundesliga title without defeat last season as well as winning the DFB Cup and reaching the final of the UEFA Europa League. VfB Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeneß and 1. FC Heidenheim boss Frank Schmidt finished behind the Spaniard.
Alonso will be presented with the kicker award this Saturday, 10 August, as part of the season-opening event at the BayArena ahead of the friendly against Real Betis.
'Player of the Season' went to former Werkself man Toni Kroos, who ended his career following his comeback for the German national team at the home EURO. The 34-year-old won his sixth Champions League title with Real Madrid last season. Behind Kroos (285 votes) were Leverkusen duo Florian Wirtz (246) and Granit Xhaka (66).
Under Carles Martínez, the Werkself have so far proved unbeatable at the BayArena. The Spaniard has led his team to victory in all three of their most recent home matches – and, it's worth noting, without conceding a single goal. On Sunday, 18 October (kick-off: 15:30 CEST / live on DAZN and Werkself Radio), current league leaders SC Freiburg will make the trip to Leverkusen, but will be without their top scorer. What's more, the Werkself have won all three of their previous home matches against the Black Forest club. With a goal, Patrik Schick could not only secure a fourth consecutive victory but also set a memorable record. Meanwhile, on what will be the ‘Health Day' at the BayArena, much of the focus will be on physical wellbeing. Today's matchday news.
