
The Finland international is suffering with impaired circulation in his right ankle bone, one of the foot bones in the ankle joint. The instability in the bone caused by the circulation problem has to be managed by immobilising the bone to prevent a potential fracture. Pohjanpalo will probably be on crutches for the next six weeks and only then will he be able to start rehab.
After the 23-year-old trained without any problems on Sunday, he reported to the Bayer 04 medical section on Monday complaining of sudden pain. Intensive and thorough examination by a specialist in Munich led to the diagnosis on Tuesday evening with a return to the training ground unlikely for months.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen have signed Portugal U21 international Afonso Moreira. The 21-year-old winger joins the club from French top-flight side Olympique Lyon on a contract to 30 June 2031. In France last year, the left-winger made 37 appearances in Ligue 1, the Coupe de France and the UEFA Europa League, scoring a total of eight goals and providing eleven assists.
